This book has a terrible rating on goodreads. This book is an assigned English text. There is a relation between these two statements.

This book is not terrible, it is brutal and honest and discusses tragedy, war, PTSD and corruption. There are no heroes here there are only those who have been broken down by the war.

Cormier is one of my favourite writers and this book is him at his honest best.

Not as good as I remembered it being in 5th grade but still entertaining. Francis and Nicole both annoyed me but I shouldn't expect more character-wise from a kids' book. I liked how it was never slow, Cormier just cut to the chase and kept it to less than 150 pages. A good book for a rainy day when you have a few hours to kill.

Whilst the plot line was mostly predictable, I enjoyed this book. The writing style, the descriptions and outlooks used of a child who grew up too fast are just perfect! The reviews made me keep putting off this book but I’m glad I finally did!!
