buddy read this with a friend and we have contradicting opinions on this book, although we both agreed on one thing: that the book isn't as dark as the tags stated it to be and i was underwhelmed when it came to the whole (supposed to be) thrilling part. it wasn't bad per se, in fact i enjoyed most parts, but for something advertised as "horror" and "thriller", it inflicts that nagging feeling when you're sure that something is just so off and it isn't impossible to refine the bit to make the experience a lot better. i guess smg's writing is what saved this book's face the whole time, plus the intricate relationship between montseratt and tristán. the codependency trope is such a perfect addition to the story, they're the ones who made me ever so excited for the journey of revealing magic secrets. this is my fourth book of smg's work, and overall i enjoyed reading silver nitrate, i guess people should take this easy and not expect anything huge, but i believe this still counts as an exciting book.

This book was exactly the genre I wanted it to be, and I loved it for it. Compelling characters, creepy-but-cool magic, occult circles doing ominous things, really fascinating use of the setting of early 1990s Mexico City and its film industry.

Okay, first of all, let me just say that I loved the concept of this book. I loved the combination of old film technology and parapsychology. The premise was full of promise.
But this book bored me to tears. Each chapter felt like a repeat of the one before. Character comes in. Character makes breakfast. Other character comes in. Characters talk to each other about what is going.
And the few measly bits of action and horror were so damn short, I felt like I blinked and they were over. A man got his throat slashed open via a magical curse and it could have been such a horrific and bloody scene. Opportunity missed.
Basically chuck in one more semi-actiony scene and that's it. The rest is made up of two bitter people talking to each other.
Also, am I really expected to believe that said bitter people suddenly woke up one day and discovered that LoVe WaS tHeRe AlL aLoNg? Tristan and Montserrat seem to annoy the utter shit out of each other for 99% of the book. Yet I'm expected to believe they somehow fall in love at the end?
I wish they had taken each other and themselves out in some magical murder-suicide ritual at the end. Totally would have saved this book in my opinion.
