This one was tough to put down — I was late to work almost consistently while I was reading this because each night when I tried to find a stopping point, I had to know MORE.

The same reason I loved this book is also the reason I give this one 4/5 — there were many parts of this story that I wanted more of. Probably an intentional choice by the author, and I can’t be too mad, because overall, this was so much fun to read.

I don't understand why this book is so popular. I DNF'd it last year and thought I'd give it another try listening this time. It was a very long story...........that shows how trauma never goes away. It was a bit far-reaching near the end.
Reminded me alot of Demon Copperfield. Which I also did not like....

There’s so much going on with this one… the prose took me a bit to settle into, it’s not the easiest style to follow and I sometimes felt like the “voice” was really just broken sentences. BUT the mystery, the characters, and the heart of this book won me over. It’s set in small-town 1970s America, and while the summary of the book talks about serial killers and murder mysteries, that’s really just the framing device. This book is also asks big questions: what is the point of religion? Who decides good vs evil? It’s a long one, but I think it’s worth it. I couldn’t put it down at the end.

There's definitely heart, ambition and complexity behind this story, but I feel the writing style gets in its own way. The prose is dense and sometimes overwrought with fragmented sentences and metaphors that feel more distracting than poetic. The pacing is uneven with some plots being rushed while others feel dragged out. The whole thing feels melodramatic.
For someone like me who prefers a clean and fluid style of storytelling, I feel this book could have been wrapped up in about 400 pages vs the 600 that it is.
