Poirot was barely even in the first half of the story, which is why it took a lot of effort on my part to keep reading. I really wasn't interested in Sir Charles, or Egg. Sir Satterthwaite was a little interesting, but meh. And even though the ending was a twist (the whole time I thought it was Egg haha), it wasn't that satisfying. Maybe it's because I had to trudge through 3/4 of a story where I honestly didn't care about the characters, or maybe because Charles' motives were just... idk, boring.
And another great novel by Agatha Christie. Maybe this story didn’t stand out as much for me as other novels she wrote did, but it has all the elements that make her detective stories great. I really liked the usage of theatre elements for the story’s structure, some characters and some situations; making them conduct the plot as the titles implies. As always I was in the dark about the criminal of the story till the end, when the eccentric Hercule Poirot explained everything in detail; and as always everything made sense and no plot hole was left behind. Maybe I would have liked for the Belgian detective to have a bigger role in the story, but at least the author made a great job connecting the discoveries of the different characters so when the detective finally appeared there were no repetitive findings or explanations.

Some more solid Christie..... proud to say that I did suspect the murderer, even if I did then get muddled over what their motive might have been and give up on the idea. I'm getting there!! I did find the eventual motive as revealed to be very silly though, and there are fewer twists, which is why this does not get the same rating as Cards on the Table. But this is perfectly serviceable, the plot fit together very neatly, and I always appreciate Christie's willingness to not insist on Poirot being the centre of attention at all times. Most of the time he's offscreen, because he's just a little dude, helping out occasionally! That's all we need.

So I think I’ve read enough Christie that I had very early suspicions about the killer that ended up being correct, so this was more of a “how dunnit” rather than a “whodunnit”. This was a mid-tier Christie for me overall. Is it just me or do more people tend to die while Poirot is in a case, haha?
