Meh. Not the best Christie book I’ve ever read.

Sigh.

This was a good book...but oof...that ending. Look, I came to really love Egg.
In fact, I spent parts of the book worrying that SHE committed the murders (maybe to get the Captain's attention?) and I so badly did not want that to be the case.
And it wasn't! Hurrah! Except...
oh man, Egg's heartbreak at the end. The captain's motive was simple, but he is clearly a ruthless man to do what he did. So, hardly the ideal husband. Plus, there was that GIGANTIC age gap, so uh, also not ideal there. But Egg cared about him so much, and I felt so terrible for her. I also knew that Oliver would swoop in at the latest moment and I don't really like that as a romantic ending either. Eh.

But yes, as for the ACTUAL mystery and the deduction thereof - I enjoyed it a lot. Everything fit together well, along with the reasoning. And the very ending, the last couple of lines, were absolutely hilarious.

3.5 Stars

Aahh, mon ami...a true mystery.

I had almost given up hope on this one. It was looking like 2 stars at most; then Hercule Poirot and his little gray cells started working. I had an inkling as to who the murderer was; but no idea. I loved how this mystery wrapped up; and yet not so neatly. No one left happy and satisfied after the murderer was found out.

FINALLY I FIGURE ONE OF THESE OUT
mysterious

The ideas at work in this one are quite fun, but the overall execution leaves much to be desired. Christie was normally excellent at giving the reader all of the clues they'll need to solve the puzzle, but that's not the case here. In the final explanation, Poirot brings up multiple things he discovered off screen that the reader could not have reasonably guessed from context clues. Things vital to putting together the full picture of the crime. I'd actually managed to piece together elements of the solution, but couldn't make sense of them because of the missing clues. The motive was equally disappointing, so it's two stars from me. Not a terrible read, but no where near as satisfying as other Christie novels.
