I picked this up solely because the cover intrigued me and was more than pleasantly surprised by the gem of a story inside. With echoes of Diane Wynne Jones, Holmberg created a world of magic and wonder that was not only immersive but endearing too. Such a thrilling and feel-good read.

The beginning and end of the book were great. This took a different spin on the world of magic, which was fun. The main characters were lovable and fun to get to know while the “bad guy” fit the description. The back and forth between Emery and Ceony is very lifelike.
The middle section spent to much time bouncing around between memories for me. That could have been cut down or streamlined in some type of way. Also, there age gap, while acceptable, is almost pushing it for me.

I highly enjoyed this! Creative, easy to read, and interesting enough to keep me going through it. Can’t wait to continue the series!
An imaginative take on a world with magic. The main characters are interesting, but the plot is quite flawed--the author does not adhere to a set of internal rules for how the magic works. Some examples: There are many instances of careless errors like these--a better editor should have caught them. Nevertheless: as a light summer entertainment, this seems like a fun series.

When the apprentice is inside the magician's heart, the "rule" is established that she cannot be seen and cannot interact with what she sees. She even has the strange experience of people walking right through her because she and they are not in the same place at the same time--she is seeing memories or dreams of the future. Yet she can get wet when she runs through cold water.
Las dos palabras que más se me vienen a la mente luego de leer este libro son Original e Interesante: el sistema de magia en que solo se pueden manipular elementos creados por el hombre, en vez de los clásicos elementos de la naturaleza, el hecho de que un mago una vez se enlace con uno de estos elementos sea para siempre y no se pueda cambiar, la forma en que vamos conociendo el pasado, las esperanzas, las culpas y deseos del mago Thane, todo esto me pareció original e interesante.
No puedo dejar de destacar que tenemos a una protagonista femenina fuerte, que no duda en hacer lo que sea necesario ni se deja intimidar ante nada ni nadie, sin dejar de ser sensible. Siempre valoro encontrar mujeres fuertes en la literatura.
Hubo algunos giros argumentales inesperados, uno o dos de ellos que me alegra no haber leído la sinopsis de la tapa de atrás porque me los hubiesen spoileado (por eso nunca se leen sinopsis!).
También me gustó mucho la evolución de la relación entre el mago Thane y Lira, la antagonista, se sintió bastante realista.
Por último, me pareció un libro muy bien logrado ya que a pesar de su corta duración, y por lo tanto poco espacio para profundizar mucho en cada punto y evento, logró hacerme sentir que conozco a los personajes y querer seguir su historia, lo cual no es nada fácil.
PD: Hasta me dejó con ganas de hacer origami

I've read better and I've read worse. it kept me reading but I think a whole lot more detail could have gone into the story. it was an interesting concept and I'm curious to know what the next book will be about.
