I liked parts of this book. Other parts felt really rushed. There are times I really didn't like the main character either.
It took place in 1901 but it didn't feel like 1901. I feel like the setting added nothing to the story especially since it had a very modern feel to it. Actually one thing that bothered me about it taking place in 1901 was that in that time period no unmarried woman would be allowed to live with a man without a chaperone present.
I think this would have been more interesting if it took place in the present; then there would be a real reason for Paper to be outdated. It seemed like Ceony was against Folding just because it bored her.

This could have been so much better. The idea of being able to use magic through man made materials was interesting but the book fell far short of using that to the fullest advantage. Also for a book set in the early 1900s it had very modern word usage.
So I did like this book, start to finish. It definitely changed in the 2nd half but I don't think that's necessarily bad. I would like to see what she does with the other types of magic in her future books. At our library it was shelved as adult fiction but I think of it more as young adult, even though the characters were 19 and 29.
A really great fantasy that sucked me in right from the start. The characters are relatable and the writing is precise. And there's a dog :)

I was given this book as a review copy on Netgalley. I'm not entirely sure why this book called out to me but I am so glad it did! This book was imaginative and unlike anything I have ever read before. When I started reading this book I was so upset for Ceony. That she had done all that work and even graduated in a year just have her dream of becoming a Smelter Magician ripped out from under her. Then as I kept reading I found out that she could read books and have images come out of pages for a few seconds. I didn't feel so bad for her after that lol I was actually a little jealous! This book just grabbed me and didn't let go, I couldn't stop reading it! I felt every emotion Ceony did and when Thane had his heart ripped out right in front of her I cried a little. Lira is seriously scary and I mean that in the most respective way possible. You have to admire her as an enemy. She beautiful and fierce and she can enchant the flesh. Plus the way she just bursts into Thane's house even with the wards he has up and starts throwing blood around before she rips his heart is just cool as hell. And I know what you're all thinking what can paper magic do against that kind of power well Ceony definitely finds out that paper isn't as harmless as some people think it is. When Lira traps her inside of Thane's heart she learns more about her teacher than she thought she ever would. She walks through the different chambers of his heart which are different parts of Thane. His hopes and his doubts and everything that makes him who he is. That was so imaginative and well written that I could imagine myself inside his heart. And whatever Ceony did the make Lira never move again was seriously impressive. I'm not sure if you can tell that I loved this book maybe it needs more exclamation points!!! This book definitely left me wanting more and I can't wait to start reading The Glass Magician.
I really enjoyed the concept of this book. The story is complex and intriguing without being confusing. The characters are flawed in very realistic ways and are emotionally relate-able. I loved the magic being performed with the paper. I didn't care for how the one-sided crush/romance evolves and think that could've been dealt with differently (and maybe it has been addressed in the two future books). However, what bothered me the most was vagueness and inconsistency of the historical details. Supposedly set in the earlier 20th century, there is talk of plastic and synthetic rubber, neither of which came into existence until 1907-1909, and therefore completely unbelievable that either of those types of medium would be readily available for those type of magicians. "Buggies" (as in cars) are also throughout the story like they're an everyday item, which given the time period is unlikely. Also at one point there is a mention of a hair tie? That seemed way out of place. This book would've fared a better rating had it not been for the historical disconnects.
I binged this book all in one night and immediately picked up book 2. Highly recommend!
What a unique story - I appreciate the world building, uniqueness of "paper magic" as well as how well some of the scenes through the middle were done. A good portion of the book involves some interesting fantastical scenes that can be hard to portray, but the author did a really great job of it.
I can't wait to see what unfolds in the rest of the series!
