While the concepts in this book are wonderfully imaginative (I could completely imagine it as a live action/animation mash-up movie with her companion paper dog and the flying paper birds and fish), the story itself and the execution of those concepts are lackluster. The lead character is really self-important and, eventually, gooey lovesick (ick). I also listened to the audiobook, which may have adversely affected my perception of the book because the narrator has an American accent and uses awful fake British accents for all the characters. She made Ceony sound so damn pretentious that I could hardly stand to listen to her dialogue.

I really liked the magic system and the characters a lot, and the premise was interesting, but it was executed rather poorly. This was an enjoyable read, but I won't be continuing the series.

I could have used a few less chapters of Ceony being INSIDE Emery Thane's heart with all the requisite gorey imagery. Other than that, quite enjoyable.

Almost perfect whimsy, and exactly what I needed.

I love magic! I love when an author creates a unique world and mode of magic. This book did both. The premise of bonding to man made materials was so intriguing. The 'folding' magic was really fun! I wanted more of that! My mind's eye could clearly see it! When I met Ceony, I immediately liked her. She's feminine, strong, intelligent, and witty. I knew immediately upon her meeting Mg. Thane that I wanted a romance. I 'shipped them from the start. I was happy with how the romance unfolds SUPER slow, it makes me want to continue reading to see what becomes of them.

Holmberg's world building is good, but I had one itty bitty issue. Ummmm, is this Victorian London? Yea, I had a really hard time believing that. Not much in the story to solidify that. It did NOT read like a period piece. It was very 'contemporary'. Even down to speech patterns.

I loved the imagination behind the 'chambers'! That was probably one of my favorite pieces of this story. I was fascinated with the characters learning about others and themselves via this platform. And as the reader, I loved learning more about characters this way.

I love a good villian. Sadly, this was not a good villian for me. And what's really sad, they could have been. They were just flat and angry. I get why, but I wanted more. Maybe we'll get more in later books? I liked this book enough to read on and find out.

Overall, a fun book. Light and easy to read. Great premise, so so execution. Some parts I zoned in and out of, due to lack of interest. Not disappointing enough to sway me from reading the rest of the series or more of this author's work. I love her imagination, and I'm sure she has much more to offer.
