This book really was the first LGBTQAI+ book that I have read. I enjoyed the characters, the storytelling, and the drama/ romance in this book. It made me feel less alone as I don't have many friends who are part of the community or who are confused about their sexuality as I am and it really gave me hope that I am not alone.
The characters are amazing. My favorite is Angel. He really had troubles and brought so many tears to my eyes all throughout the book. I loved Ruben and Zach. Their story really resonated with me and not feeling confident to come out and also not being able to.
The storytelling is wonderful and you really get an insight into these people's lives. My favorite type of book is one that is written from two perspectives. I felt as though because their lives were very interconnected I got confused at some points about which character was which chapter. Despite this, the characters were told from a wonderful view.
I think it is admirable to write this book and tackle some very hard topics. This book really helped me.

This book was SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Read my full review here, but here is a preview:

Sweet, romantic, exciting, frustrating, beautiful, and loving

If This Gets Out is way cuter than I anticipated. I really enjoyed this book a lot! I loved the internal dialogue between the two main characters, and I loved how each of the boys had such different personalities. I found myself more than one time smiling at myself while reading because I felt like I was a teen falling in love at the same time. Well done!

If This Gets Out follows an incredibly famous boy band, Saturday, and it’s members. It mostly centers around Ruben, who is gay, but forced to be silenced by the record label, and Zach, who believes himself to be straight, but ultimately just hasn’t explored his sexuality yet. It starts out with these two best friends switching between their perspectives as they steal glances at each other. After they venture onto their international tour, tensions rise and everything changes when they share a stolen kiss.

I love how this was written. This book is co-authored by Sophie Gonzales and Cale Dietrich, which makes a lot of sense considering how many characters there are. I loved that they ended up dividing the two main characters, so each author wrote one of the main characters. It really allowed them to delve into the characters internal thoughts better and really picture what they would have been feeling. I think it really made for a more organic understanding of each character!Continue reading...

Okay, so this had some enjoyable parts, and some not so enjoyable parts. I liked the dynamic between the band members - Angel’s humour and Jon’s sweet, stressed-out personality really added charm to the story. However, the main characters, Zach and Ruben, fell a little flat for me. I felt they lacked distinct personalities and at times I struggled to tell them apart.

Zach, especially, came across as really bland, which made it hard for me to connect with him. I get that his passiveness was sort of the point, and he eventually had his little confidence arc but I couldn’t help but think that the other band members would’ve been a better choice to centre the story on as they just had more about them.

I will say, I really liked Zach and Ruben’s first kiss, and the angst and tension that followed was surprisingly entertaining despite the classic miscommunication trope. I had a lot of fun at the start, but as the story went on I found myself losing interest.

It was a nice reading. I read it fast. It was cool and interesting to read about a boys band and the music industry. Some truths were probably told about the struggles some artists may live as being managed by people who decide your every move and how you should live your life and not being your authentic self.
It was nice to have two different point of views. It allows the readers to learn more of their way of thinking, their emotions, their wants and needs, and their family life. But i feel like the others characters are under developped.
Other than that, it's a good m/m romance. Easy going and nice to read.
I don't know if it exists but an official playlist with the songs of the band would have been dope. A bit curious on how the songs sound like.

this was an impulsive reread but I definitely enjoyed it just as much as the first time. part of me can see why people compare it to you know who, like teenagers who all have musical ambitions meeting and getting swept up really quickly by a controlling management company, but I can't see that in the characters at all (and I don't think you're supposed to). This book is really fun but also emotional. I love the realization and exploration of sexuality that happens for zach, as well as the way layered and different issues and dynamics affect both of them, like their very distinct difficulties with their moms and the way both mcs, as well as their bandmates, bump up against the pressure and control coming from their management company. This book has very fleshed out interpersonal relationships. One of my favorites is the understanding jon and ruben have for one another with regard to their complicated (and to various degrees exploitative) parent relationships.
