Monarch

It was okay, I liked the premise of the book but it was poorly executed dare I say? compared to Grimestone which had a lot more to it. Monarch didn’t make me truly feel anything, which was unfortunate because I wanted to to really enjoy it as I did the former, I felt bad for Ivy and that was one of the big mysteries but we don’t find out why she didn’t speak, or really anything to do with her mother or how that dynamic was between the 3 of them before Lorne killed her mother (wasn’t confirmed) honestly every problem that was in the book that was of concern the whole time was just solved like it was nothing in the last 30ish pages so it just felt so underwhelming. I think it was rushed and under developed. There was no humour, no banter, I didn’t giggle or feel flushed at anything. Besides how sick and twisted Lorne was and how he made me uncomfortable. It was almost bland, it wasn’t really that mysterious or sexy, nor was it really that dark… I’m not even sure how to explain it, I may come back once I think on how better to describe it… I wasn’t bored just not impressed?
I loved the little snips of Dane and Remi a year later, that’s what got me most excited.
I liked Atlas because he reminds me of a teddy bear, he was gentle, kind, sweet, loving and protective to a fault… I adored his devotion to protect and care for Elena, even Ivy.
Elena was sweet but I just couldn’t relate to her really, although I did love the attention she paid to ivy and really being there to understand her needs and how she communicates, she genuinely wanted to be a mother for her. I understand the necessity of needing to flea her country and just dreaming and hoping for a better life and being so blinded as to the person she was with out of pure necessity, I wish that had been explored more. Personally my grandparents are all immigrants who left war ridden countries or just from poor conditions, at even younger ages so that peaked my interest a lot! my nagypapa and nagymama were from Eastern Europe and fled at 18 to Canada for a better life with only the few dollars in their pockets, so for that reason I felt for Elena I wish she had gone more into talking about that experience… finally leaving and all the feelings that come with it, she seemed as though she adjusted immediately, despite the conditions she left you’d think it would still be a challenge to get used to your new surroundings.
Side note: we all know a Lorne and exactly what I hoped would happy to him did… he died, leaving Elena and Atlas to marry which led them to adopting ivy! Yay to that. But seriously he was sick and fucking twisted… made me want gag at every interaction with him. Barf

Romantic thrillers are THE best thing on earth!!
Especially this one, it had everything I love!

I went in blindly without reading the blurb because I just knew that Sophie would do it again and she did.
I thought that the first guy, Lorne, would be her live interest but as soon as we got Atlas I knew.

And Atlas, he’s the best!
He’s so sweet and gentle towards her and grumpy towards everyone else and I love that.

I also loved the tension and their chemistry that seemed to appear every time they were in a close proximity.

But seriously, the mystery aspect was by far my favourite and i definitely recommend this book to everyone

While I really loved this romance, I wasn’t as engaged with this plot as with Grimstone’s, the first book in the series. The ending especially left a lot to be desired. Things wrapped up so quickly, missing the opportunity to expand on Lorne’s motives, any backstory, and more angst and tension.

I love Grimstone as the setting and I can’t wait for more stories in this costal town. Sophie’s writing is great and easy to read as always. I mean, I did read this in a day.
