I enjoyed Life Sucks.  Unique vampire storyline with comedy along the way.  I  have some reservations about the ending though.

In these days of TWILIGHT and Anne Rice, it's fun to read a graphic novel that takes the conventions of the vampire to a place no one has really explored before.

This (along with AMERICAN VAMPIRE) is the BOOK CLUB OF DOOM book for October 2013. I'll post a more complete review after our meeting.

I started reading this book as part of my never-ending mission to find good books for my school library. Will I put it in my library? Probably not.

I started out disliking the book because it was cliche and trite. Poor nice guy likes beautiful girl who catches the attention of a rick and gorgeous guy. Blah, blah, blah. SO the men happen to be vampires, there are too many vampire works out for this to be the only [b:saving grace|130916|The Saving Graces A Novel|Patricia Gaffney|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1171995451s/130916.jpg|126092]. I went from dislike to strongly dislike when the main character and his nemesis bet on who could get 'the wetback' to date them first, then the main character is called a 'pussy' for not standing up the Wes, then 'the piece of ass' is harder to get than Wes expected. Both men end us sleeping with the girl, in different ways. Arg. Why would anyone put a 'teen' lable on this? None of the characters are teen, nor are the themes. Juvenile, yes, but not what I would classify as teen.

Good points? The ending. It sucks (pun intended) when the only good writing is in the last few pages. It makes you what to read the next book in the series, but can't quite make you forget that you didn't like what came before.

I picked this up since it was a graphic novel I hadn't seen before, and while I was flipping through it the artwork looked like the style I enjoy. The art is good, though the story is predictable and probably more appealing to emo youth that are overly into vampire culture.

I read this graphic novel cause I was looking for some new vampire content. Honestly, it was disappointing. Although it started as a different take on teen vampires and ancient vampire types, it didn't really keep the mood up with originality enough to keep me reading continuously. Sure, it does go for "a vampire who is just a basic teen dude has a classic teen movie moment" story but unfortunately, it is too "teen guy" to have any connection with the main character. And that made it hard for me to keep up with it. Because no matter how hard you try to feel for the character in some way to want him to win, he just shows how much of a basic teen he is. Another aspect that made the reading experience cold for me was the art style. It felt a little too plain and a little messy for my taste. Some profiles were drawn a tad awkward, which might be an intentional choice cause it is through the lens of an awkward teen but it was a dealbreaker for me. I DNFd it a few times but decided to finish it to see where it goes cause I had a little too much time on my hands. Well, it surely is something that I will forget about in a month or so.

Way better than I expected. It was funny and had characters that actually seemed... real.

I'm pretty meh about this graphic novel. It's been on my reader's radar for a while, but it just didn't do it for me. The concept of an ordinary vampire seems just slogging it out like the rest of us, maybe worse than the rest of us, seems almost trite at this point, even though it's more original that most of the post-Interview with a Vampire/Buffy/Twilight shizz out there. The rationale that led to Dave's indoctrination as a vampire is probably the best part. The rest just reminded me of a mid-90s independent film.

Plays on current vampire-hype, showing how vampire lives may not be all that glamorous.

Dave is a vampire. Since vampires are burned by sunlight, he works nights at a convenience store. He drinks blood from a bottle. And he serves the mythical-vampire-obsessed goths that visit the store in the middle of the night.

Amusing contrast between the real drudgery of his life and the imaginings of vampfans everywhere. Nothing too thrilling here, but enjoyable enough.
