I feel like this is an important novel highlighting an unfortunate period for women. However, I think this could have benefited more from being non-fiction or highlighting individual stories rather than the single nameless narrator who acted as a voice for the numerous women presented here. I think I would have liked to hear more of the individual stories, tragic though they are.

Maybe the blurb was to blame for my reaction to this book. I borrowed it expecting to learn about how women and asylums and perceived mental illness. I definitely wasn’t expecting a cheery book, but I was anticipating a coherent book. Instead this book is written in stream of consciousness from the perspective of heavily traumatized, drugged women, which is to full of confusion. I’m sure this book has its audience, but the blurb is misleading.
