Plot or Character Driven: A mix

(Review en español en mi blog LINK)
I did't liked a lot of the characters, Indiana looked to me like a fantasy woman, always worred about her job and not about herself, this whas so extreme that he can't focus on her relationships, or her daugther

Amanda's father, was a strange character, he wanted her daugther far from the police investigation, but he was giving her the clues about the cases, this was so strange.

In mi opinion the best was Amanda, her grand-dad and Pedro Alarcon, no dowt the best part of the book was the Ripper game with the grand fathe, i swear I've waiting for the game's part. On the other hand Alarcon was a really good character, he always cae about his friend, he was good to Amanda, and he was always able to help.

This book was good, but i do not recommend it for anywan who don't like crime books, for me was good but a little boring, if you like crime books read it, then skip it.

It's been a number of years since I've read an Isabel Allende novel, and I remember really liking her writing. I didn't LOVE it in this book. It felt sometimes disjointed, and I never got a good handle on one of the main characters. As a mystery story, it was decent, but it wasn't the prose I remembered.

I have heard a lot of great things about Isabel Allende's writing so being able to pick up her newest novel had me excited. The part of this book that truly got me interested was how this is a book about a group of people working together as a group to solve murders happening in San Francisco. Now going into this without knowing too much, I thought I was kind of getting into something kind of about Jack the Ripper, I was definitely wrong, and yet I was not completely disappointed by the story, though I had my issues.

This novel goes through many different perspectives, at times it felt that there were too many voices for this one story. I felt that for a book that was supposed to be about murders and a group of people solving them, that plot kind of fell to the background a little bit. Every once in a while there would be a mention of it, but for the most part this book is about Indiana and the people that her life revolves around. Indiana has a lot of people around her that really love her, but her relationship with her daughter, Amanda is what makes this book. They have a very strong relationship and are there always there for each other, they are each other's best friends (almost like a Rory and Lorelai relationship is what I saw).

Ryan is another character that really helps move the story along, he is someone with a lot of personal issues that Indiana helps through things, and in a way he opens up Indiana's life and shows her there is more to the eye. I love the contrast between all the characters, Indiana is someone who wants to see the good in everybody she comes in contact with, whereas those around her are more into the darker side of things, especially Amanda, and as the book continues, this seems to cause some trouble.

There are some interesting twists that Allende brings out in the book, it was closer to the end where things really start to get interesting and truly where the story picks up. I was close to giving up on this book a couple of times, but that is around the time that a new murder would occur and I would be brought back in. I did find this to be an interesting story at times, but I just felt that what the story was supposed to be about lacked and was overshadowed by other plots, that didn't seem as important. Sadly, it just didn't end up being the best book for me.

Having never read Isabel Allende before but liking the mystery element of this novel which is not characteristic of her other works, I was interested to give this a try. It's a slow starter with a lot more character development (oh my gosh what a lot of character development) than your standard mystery novel but it does pick up the pace as you work your way through it. And while I did figure out who did it fairly early on the story that Allende told to get there was not predictable although it did feel like she took much less time developing the bad guy character than any of the other characters in the novel. A solid book that is worth a read.

i just wanted to finish it, i read 270 pages in one sitting lol.

The end was so good, i wouldve putten 4 starts, but the start wasnt that good. I did liked how it ended tho. But the character description was not it, there were so many characters and i was so confused at the beginning with who is who, and she described characters that werent even relevant to the story. I think that was what got me most bored.

A very excellent book didn't really see the ending
