Isabel Allende is one of my favorite authors. I have read everything she has ever published (after it gets translated into English). Her writing is fluid and dreamlike and it's one of my favorite things in the world.
But it doesn't really lend itself to a mystery novel.
Her other books are just as violent. Just as sexy. Crime fiction just doesn't work for her style, at least for me. I had pretty well figured out three main perpetrators by the middle of the book, and I was pretty damn close on two accounts.
So. I mean....
Maybe I just don't like crime novels, even when one of my favorites attempts it.

I love Allende's books. This was her first foray into mystery. I was a little lost in the beginning just due to there being so many characters. I did eventually catch on but I think that this would be better read than listened to.
Amanda is a precocious young woman who is obsessed with crime. She forms a group called Ripper who investigate crimes and talk about different serial killers. Her grandfather is a part of the group and helps his granddaughter with her strange obsession. Amanda's father is a police officer giving her and her grandfather access to a lot of the police files. When people start dying Amanda and her team try to solve the murders. While the victims seems random is there a connection?
This is well written with Amanda drawing you in and helping you get caught up in the investigation. You get pulled along and then Indiana, Amanda's mother goes missing and solving the case becomes so much more important. As they get closer and closer the book picks up speed. The killer was actually a surprise and the ending well done. I would recommend reading this instead of getting it as an audio book

A hundred pages in and this trite, boring "mystery" was headed nowhere, so I gave up on it. I couldn't stand most of the characters and the plot was virtually nonexistent. Very disappointing genre effort from Isabel Allende.
dark
mysterious
slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven:

Strong character development:

Loveable characters:

Diverse cast of characters:

Flaws of characters a main focus:

Pacing was a but slow. There is a good, diverse cast of characters, but some rely too heavily on stereotypes.
The ultimate reveal of the murder isn't all that satisfying. The book tries to do too much with the character of the killer being one person with 4 identities. We don't really get a good reason as to why Keller was killled.

I love Isabel Allende, and this book just plain disappointed a fan. Mystery/thriller is not her genre. It felt forced, the characters were stilted. If it wasn't Allende, I might have given it 3 stars, but for her, I felt it was far below average.
Storyline was captivating from all the points of view at the beginning. Kind of figured out who was behind the crimes, but still had good twists. For me though, the ending was extremely disappointing
Demasiadas descripciones que no aportan nada, desde mi punto de vista, a la trama. Se hace demasiado pesada la lectura. Lo que más engancha son las últimas 100 páginas quizá.
