Really good book for anyone interested in dogs and dog psychology. Not too dense or overboard on science either - readable
Fascinating information; this dog lover learned lots!
An interesting book. As other reviewers have noted, it at times seemed to drag on with useless or unrelated information. However, what this book did well was share ideas on new ways of thinking about what it is like to be a dog. For people who are already dog-lovers, this book may help them to become more aware of the differences in dog and human perception and understanding of the world. This can increase our appreciation and enjoyment of dogs, and also assist us in making their lives with us more fulfilling.
This is an intelligent, insightful, and captivating book and a must read for all dog owners who seek a greater understanding of our furry friends' perspectives and thoughts. Horowitz describes the research behind dogs' perception and cognition, along with examples and stories from her own four-legged family member. This book aims to define a dog's "umwelt," or "self-world," and encourages humans to be aware of anthropomorphism or putting a human perspectives on a dog's reality and life. Horowitz answers many dog owners' questions about dogs' behaviors, including their sense of smell, style of greeting, and playtime actions. She explains how dogs use their eyes, ears, taste, tactile sensation, and -- most importantly -- sense of smell to discover information in their worlds. She also gives insight into why dogs make such perfect companions by bonding with their humans. After reading this book, I feel even closer to my own dog and better able to understand her ambitions and perspectives. Although this book is not designed to be training-oriented, there are important implications for how to effective manipulate dogs' behaviors and reinforce good behavior.
This was such a fun book to read! With every chapter, I could look at my own dog and understand what the author was talking about.
Most of the book just reinforced what I already knew about dogs based simply on having one myself (dogs PAY ATTENTION, dogs need stimulation, dogs can catch our yawns and we can catch theirs). But there was the occasional bit of research or advice that I had never heard before and it changed the way I looked at my dog or the way I behaved regarding her.
A quick and satisfying read, I recommend this to ANY dog owner. I wanted to rate it "really like it" but I realized that is only because I REALLY like dogs.

Harder to read than her book on puppies but full of interesting and valuable info on dogs.
I liked this book, but it definitely dragged in a lot of places. But I learned a few things my two big goober companions, so it was worth slogging through.
