This is one of my favorite genres - memoir, loosely joined - by one of my favorite authors. Huge, extravagant, delicious page after page. It makes me want to read more, write more, think more: be more.

I enjoyed getting to know Pat Conway a little better. I love his work, so hearing him read his own memior was very nice. You can see how most of the fiction he wrote was still based on his life. For the most part, I think he wrote about what he knew which is always a good thing.

I got this as a library DL to my Nook and within two chapters, I knew I had to have a physical copy for my library. I've read a couple of books by Pat Conroy and knew I liked his style of writing (lots of others don't) but wow, after reading this small gem of a book, I am a devoted fan and will read everything else by him.

He writes small essays about who and what were the greatest impacts on his reading life, from his mother to a beloved English teacher, the novel Gone With The Wind, a favorite bookstore, The Old New York Book Shop in Atlanta, GA, other authors and locales that shaped him as a writer. I laughed, cried, reread sentences over and over, and this book touched my soul, reaffirming my feelings of why I love to read. Another all time favorite.

Not his best. But anything Mr. Conroy writes I inhale like oxygen.

Pat Conroy is a gorgeous writer who doesn't waste a single sentence. Listening to him read his book on audio is the way to go. I have never read a Pat Conroy book but am now a bit interested in "The Great Santini" which is semi-autobiographical. RIP, Pat Conroy.

A 330 page love letter to the act of reading. Pat Conroy's love for the written word is infectious, and every sentence is touching and heartfelt. There's no focus beyond reiterating, over and over again, how wonderful losing yourself in a book is, but here, that's perfectly fine. A definite must read if you want to feel like you're having a very nice, long coffee-house conversation with a friend who shares the same glorious obsession as you.

Conroy's love affair with books, with words, and with the life of a devoted reader, and how it shaped him into a writer. Very personal at times, and richly loquacious at others, this book is assembled from some previously-published works, and as such tends to often return to the same pivotal points in his life. An interesting read, simply for feeling inadequate about one's one reading life.
