I found a few of the methods to approaching songwriting in this book helpful. It was by no means life changing, but it's well written and will inspire most people to start writing songs. It's a quick and funny read too.

Very technical advice from one of my favorite songwriters. It's rare that we get to hear about drilling and practice routines from actually successful creatives, so this is a treat. I still haven't written that one song yet. Maybe I need to read this again.
