Audio book version!
Great introspection on why we create, and the strategies we employ in our attempts to experiment in the arts.
Learned some cool tips, and got some great stories from Mr. Tweedy. That’s all I need.

I’d like more practical, writerly advice about chord changes and themes and so on, but this is not that kind of book, and that’s OK.

love this one so much. thank u jeff tweedy for actually getting me writing! i wrote lyrics (finally) because of this book everybody! thank god. deadlines approach.
i’m a really big fan of jeff’s idea of getting your ego out of the way in order to do anything creative. the whole book is based on this idea - it’s very concrete in terms of creative advice but still maintains a kind of wonder surrounding the process, which i really appreciate. also includes a ton of general encouragement, which i find myself needing more and more these days. definitely going to come back to this whenever i’m struggling to get myself moving again.

I love learning about process. The process of song writing fascinates me, just from the aspect of there being so many moving parts. You have both the music and the lyrics. Tweedy does an excellent job of demystifying the experience and makes the reader feel like they actually have the ability to make this happen. It has always been my contention that each person has a great song in them. This will help people get that out.
This actually explains a creative process of writing songs, or some part of it at least, explained as credible thoughts, a realistic approach, and not some enigmatic or romanticised image, of which I can fully appreciate.
I’ve read so many music autobiographies, hoping to pick up on the secrets, or even the secrets of the habits, of how best to get a song started and finished, only to be slightly let down by the lack of accounts of any such creative pursuit. But this isn’t an autobiography, and I wouldn’t recommend reading it based on any love of Jeff Tweedy or Wilco, but of a love of creating, or wanting to create, anything artistic in general. There are perspectives in here not to be ignored.
The title would suggest a definitive self help guide, some step by step method to achieve a guaranteed result, but it’s more about having something to aim at, getting there in any way possible. It’s a talk with an artist, a conversation that we don’t usually get, about what holds us back and what gets us going.
I didn’t know much about Jeff Tweedy or Wilco before reading this, but I now appreciate his work ethic and I would definitely go back to this book to prevent getting stuck.
