Human, Saeris Fane accidentally activates a portal to another realm and ends up stuck working with a Fae warrior as a means to an end.

It took me a little bit to get into this story and connect with the characters but once it picks up- I was bought in! Loved the ending of the book! There was an interesting magic system, great world building, exciting challenges and very endearing characters.

This had such potential and I hate that I hated it so much at first. I think some of the reviews are forgetting how bad the first half of this book was, because the second half was so much better.

The first half of the book was just Kingfisher being unbearable, but not in a fun way. In a baby's first angst fanfiction 'I'm going to make this character say the most inappropriate thing possible for the shock factor so you hate him' kind of way. Throw in random out-of-place scenes where he goes on a tirade about how fantastic she is, then go straight back to being awful. This isn't so much enemies-to-lovers as it was 'author eviscerates character and then decides 'actually, you love him now!' out of nowhere'.

The second half of the book was so much better. Once the 'Kingfisher is awful because I said so' brigade ended, we got to some actually good plot and interesting developments.
Loreth getting the sword? Fantastic. Carrion being the long-lost fae prince? Unfortunately predictable, given you are told of the possibility very close to the beginning, but still fun.

I'll probably read the second book now that Kingfisher's awful era is over (hopefully), but you really have to push through this one to get to the good stuff.

Holy Annorath Mor, this was absolutely breathtaking! I was soo nervous this wouldn’t live up to the hype but it completely surpassed all my expectations.

The chemistry between our MCs, Saeris and Kingfisher, was gorgeously intense and the prose beautifully atmospheric. The pacing was pretty good too, though Kingfisher didn’t show up nearly as quickly as I hoped (he doesn’t make an appearance until about the 60 page mark, and his interactions with don’t properly start until about 100ish pages in.)

The depth and personality we get to explore in soo many of the characters was phenomenal too! And the band of misfits/ found family vibes that develop between them and Saeris was soo heartwarmingly endearing (honestly by the end I felt like I knew them all, and just wanted to give each and every one of them a big hug.)

Though, of them all, I definitely had the biggest soft spot for Carrion-whose flirtatious banter and general antics really helped defuse some of the most tense moments.

The plot twists were jaw dropping also and I honestly wasn’t expecting the ending to have quite that many.

This is an adult Romantasy, so there are several steamy, open door scenes — if that’s not your kind of thing then you’re probably not gonna enjoy this.

I also suggest checking TWs beforehand too, as it does delve into themes, situations and issues that some readers may not find enjoyable.

Overall, a fantastic Romantasy series starter whose sequel I’m already desperate to get my hands on!
