Some poor writing covered over by the spicy scenes but last 200 pages is better as the plot actually plots rather than Saeris and Fisher hating/fucking each other.

This was my second “Romantasy” and I bing read it and definitely will reread before brimstone comes out. The plot and the MMC are the reason this was a 5 star book for me.

Wow, what a book! I can't even properly put my thoughts into words. The worldbuilding is great with unique twists (warring races/nations aren't new, but the lore behind them sure is special enough to shine bright), the characters are multidimensional and compelling (with both endearing and infuriating traits), and all the emotional plot twists with slowly revealing information are just... *chef's kiss*. I can't wait to get to the sequel when it is published!

//After reading this I came across multiple reviews and commentaries of this book showing how this book has a trope of continuously negating a woman rejecting a man, and the potentially dangerous real-life consequences of enforcing this kind of mindset. This made me drop down my rating vy a star, as I agree. That aspect of the plot could have been handled better.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'll very likely pick up the sequel when it comes out. I'd like to see Fisher get knocked down a peg or two, and let Saris get some control back. A lot of things just kinda happen to her, and it'd be nice for her to have a bit more agency. She was a really fun FMC though, I liked her background in resistance fighting and forging. I'm curious to see how the dynamics between the side characters develop too, especially given what we learned about a certain someone at the end. I'd also like to see more good queer rep, not just the bi slut trope.

I had strange and conflicting feelings about this book, and I believe realistically I would give it a 3.5/5 stars. I can understand why many filed “Quicksilver” under DNF before the halfway point, as I was very tempted.

In the earlier chapters of the book, the narrator is not necessarily someone I liked or related to. Gods help me I may have cracked and lit the book on fire if Saeris made one more mention about how much she hated dresses and wanted to wear pants, even if it were the less feminine option. To me, she felt like a combination of all of the typical quirks of a fantasy FMC…

However, upon meeting several of the other characters, I was enticed to keep reading, and I’m not disappointed that I did. Though it took me a few days to comb through the first half of the book, I devoured the second half in a day, which makes me understand why so many people have recommended it. If you can get past the first half, and get over how slightly obnoxious and whiny the main character was in the first chapters, then this book has a wonderful plot line, interesting magic system, and some well-written spice, that doesn’t dominate over the overarching themes of the book.

Didn’t adore the book, but I did love the characters, and will be buying the second for that!
