Funny (read annoying) in the way Big Mouth is funny (read annoying). I am not sure how you'd appreciate the musical numbers if you don't listen to the audio book. I would say a must read/listen if you were a theatre kid in any capacity.

Rachel Bloom, best known as the creator and star of the award-winning series Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, delivers a candid, funny, and at times deeply moving memoir with I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are. Through a mix of essays, diary entries, poems, and quirky lists, Bloom reflects on her experiences with mental health, social anxiety, fame, and the lifelong feeling of being an outsider.

Her writing is as bold and unfiltered as her comedy—direct, self-aware, and full of humor. One of the book’s strongest aspects is Bloom’s willingness to talk openly about her struggles with OCD and intrusive thoughts, without losing her light touch. It’s this balance of vulnerability and wit that makes her voice so relatable and refreshing.

The book doesn’t follow a strict narrative structure, but its tone is consistent: warm, introspective, and never afraid to dig into the uncomfortable or absurd. Bloom challenges the idea of what it means to be “normal” and shows that trying to fit in can be just as strange as standing out.

Conclusion:
I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are is more than just a celebrity memoir. It’s a funny, honest, and insightful look at the messy, imperfect, and hilarious parts of being human. Rachel Bloom reminds us that not feeling normal is, in fact, entirely normal—and even a little wonderful.

Wow, I knew I'd love this book but it particularly resonates at this moment in time. I highly recommend the audiobook because Rachel sings and has great asides for the listeners. I think I may buy the hardcopy too! It was poignant, hysterical, insightful, and guffaw-inducing.
