A perfect picture of the 1950s and the darkness that came from it--right down to the Loony Tunes quotes. A surprising ending that made the 800+ pages worth it.

Did not love. Would have preferred if it had 300 pages less of inner dialogue and free association or Madeleine got prescribed Ritalin at some point. Also didn't find the Oskar sub-plot necessary -- it detracted me more than anything else. The whole thing left me exhausted and craving ice cream.

This book is deep. I had a hard time getting into it and hard time staying interested at some points, but overall it is a very emotional, complex story that I really really liked.

This book was an exellent read and to this day haunts me. (I read this book several years ago.)

Lyrical eulogy to a lost childhood.
A young girl is sexually abused by her teacher. A father hides a war criminal. A classmate is murdered.
Recovery, strength and courage.

what a terrifying book. It goes to prove that the things you think you fear or ought to fear are irrelvant while the your trust in others is unfounded. Set in the cold war at a military base it starts off slow and pedantic and then builds up to every parent's nightmare.

A lesson in communication and assumptions and what is unsaid and half said and unasked and unanswered.
