A 16 year old has been telling me for months that I need to read this book, and I can see why she loved it. The alternating narrators are funny, quirky, intelligent, non-conformist book nerds. Granted, Dash is a little too full of himself and his giant vocabulary, and Lily is a bit much in her "one oversized majorette boot and one Chuck" getup, but overall I thought they were adorable. There were moments in which I wondered if the authors had at all planned out their narrative arc (they hadn't) and moments in which I thought the characters really shone. Some of the ensemble cast added greatly to the understanding of who Lily and Dash really are, while others I could have done without. (Why does Dash lie repeatedly to Priya, but then she shows up to support him in a crisis? What kind of friends are they? That seemed weird to me.) In other words, I think the super-team of David and Rachel should have had a more heavy handed editor to tighten the book. Overall, though, cute and appealing to a certain smart demographic that is snarly but wants to believe in something.
Cute and silly holiday read. But Lily kind of made me crazy, and therefore I'm sticking with a 3 star review.

I hardly ever say this but the Netflix adaptation was better. The book made me want to throw it at Dash’s head. My dude has some real god complex. No, you’re not the smartest guy in the world, but you sure are the most annoying guy in the world. The premise had SO MUCH potential only to be let down catastrophically by the writing.

Nice casual read, I probably liked the ending more than I did the ending of the show. Lily is cute, Dash too, and I like the couple they make.
Started but it was too Christmasy for the moment. I will get back to it. Love those two authors and all their characters.

Rachel Cohn and David Levithan have joined together to create absolute magic in Dash and Lily's Book of Dares. Upon finishing the first chapter I already knew that I had fallen in love with this wonderfully unique story.
Upon searching the shelves at The Strand book store as usual, Dash comes across a red notebook placed there by Lily and starts a series of dares that take both Dash and Lily across New York. The two communicate through the notebook and the dares, starting something special between snarly, language loving Dash and cautiously optimistic Lily. While there is definitely a spark between the pair, problems such as ex-girlfriends, a gerbil killer, a lost boot and an over-excited dog named Boris continue to get in the way. Not to mention that they have never actually met in person.
This brilliant mix of romance, humour and adventure is filled with laugh out loud moments and a satisfyingly good ending. Dash and Lily are both immediately likeable and you'll be openly hoping for their happy ending. I promise that this won't be a book that you'll forget any time soon.

Light read. Plot is interesting -- like a cat and mouse game between two individuals who haven't met but tries to get to know each other (and by extension, themselves) better by sharing a diary of some sort. It started cute and fun -- dorky flirtations, funny comments and all that. But towards the end, I don't know, I sort of lost interest.
It irks me that the girl lead called Hermione 'Hermione Potter'. And she's supposed to be someone who loves to read? Disappointing.

Я получила нереальное удовольствие от чтения этой книги! Она очень милая, добрая, забавная, да и рождественская атмосфера тут тоже довольно хорошая.
Дэш — серьезный и чуточку угрюмый по поводу зимних праздников парень, который любит торчать в книжном магазине, обсуждать книги и цитировать поэзию. Он избегает празднование Рождества, как и обоих своих разведенных родителей в эти дни.
Лили — мечтательная девчонка с кучей родственников по всему Нью-Йорку, которые заботятся о ней. Она любит романтичные штучки, собак, своего дедулю и брата, но довольно одинока. И еще уверена, что все считают ее чудачкой.
Однажды старший брат Лили и его парень предлагают ей завести друга, оставив записную книжку с небольшим квестом в книжном магазине, которую успешно находит Дэш.
Мне нравится, что хотя Дэшу и Лили по шестнадцать, а в книге мелькают взрослые темы секса, выпивки и отношений, они ведут себя как подростки из прошлого, а не среднестатистические зумеры-гигачады из современных сериалов: переписываются через блокнот, оставляют его в разных местах города и дают на это подсказки, ходят есть шоколадную пиццу с кузенами и недавно обретенными знакомыми, мечтают получить в подарок словарь и нелепо бродят по городу в одном сапоге, потому что так тебя точно узнает твой друг по переписке.
Я бы сказала, что они оба немного manic pixie girl друг для друга, но в хорошем смысле этого слова. И все вокруг них доброе и уютное — от примирения с бывшей девушкой, которая стала сейчас хорошей подругой, до пожилых друзей дедули, которые грозятся твоим потенциальным ухажерам, чтобы те тебя не обидели.
Книга напомнила мне «Дневники принцессы» и «Союз волшебные штаны», так что если вам понравилось то, то понравится и это. И перевод на русский получился очень-очень хорошим.
Единственный небольшой минус заключается в том, что я ждала супер романтичной встречи главных героев, которые будут к тому моменту уже влюблены без памяти, но романтика в этой книге стоит далеко не на первом месте. Как и Рождество — но читать ее лучше всего зимой.
