I'll be honest. I picked this book without even reading the blurb. I was headed out of town, and I needed a book to listen to while driving. This is one of my favorite things about the solo road trip, so I would no be denied. The only problem is everyone else seems to have figured out the joy of downloading audiobooks from the library website. None of the books on my waiting list were available yet, so I just picked something that had a cool cover and was immediately available. I didn't even realize this was a Christmas book, but a well-written Christmas story is a well-written story any time of the year.
This book is told inalternating perspectives of two New York teens over a particularly difficult Christmas. Dash has convinced each of his divorced parents that he is staying with the other leaving him to spend the holiday alone enjoying his favorite book store, The Strand. This is where he first meets Lilly in the form of a blank notebook hidden amongst the Salinger novels. The book begins with a series of dares which Dash accepts and then passes back to Lilly. Dash is a bit too disaffected and particular to be charming. I wanted to like him from the beginning, but he's just a bit too cranky. Apparently this is supposed to be likeable since every new character he meets describes him as snarly. For example, he hates Christmas with the ferocity of a disillusioned middle aged man. Additionally, the complete freedom from adult supervision seems a bit unrealistic.
Lilly is a perky and supercute girl called LillyBear by friends and family. She is spending Christmas with her older brother and his boyfriend while her parents are on vacation in Fiji and her grandfather is in Florida with his girlfriend. Lilly's stuggle is with being too sensitive and emotional. At times she is endearing and quirky, but she is also often annoyingly perky and childish. She loves Christmas but only because it is filled with presents and kitschy decorations.
Dash and Lilly aren't the only unrealistic characters. The book is populated by a multitude of unbelievably quirky and one-dimensional characters. This is the kind of book you want to like because it is a great concept, and it has the potential to great, but it never even comes close to greatness. Dash and Lilly's predictably inevitable relationship strained the bounds of reality and was destined to failure. In the real world, I don't think these two could even be friends. (Grades 10 and up)

Wish I hadn't seen the adaption prior to reading this, as I feel like it colored my perceptions a lot. First third of the book is definitely the strongest, and I feel it peters out from there.
Still, an enjoyable low-stakes read.

I loved the concept of this book. I just cannot decide if I liked the execution. I'm a writer, and a small, tiny, very miniscule part of me wishes I had come up with this idea because I would like to see where I would have taken it. Alas, this is not so. I love both author's individual styles and their books alike, so I am not disappointed, but this book did leave me yearning for more. Very good winter break read.
4.5 stars
This was honestly such a cute book!! I loved the characters and the entire storyline was really unique and fun to read. And also, it's the perfect season to read it!

Bought this book this afternoon for 2 reasons. 1. I loved Nick and Nora's. I won't even see the movie - despite my fondness of Michael Cera and Kat Demming. 2. Because Sue and Josh are friends with David Levithan, and I like to read stuff by people I or other people know. :)
Anyway. I LOVE THIS BOOK. I want to live in the Strand, and I want to be able to use words the way Dash does. I want to be Lily with her crazy family full of interesting people and have a friend like Boomer.
Books like these make me happy that I am not above reading YA literature. They make me want to remind teenage girls that there are awesome books out there not about vampires.
So yeah. Love this book. Will read it again on a day when I want to go on an adventure through the streets of New York City with teenagers that know how to use the English language in a way I wish I could.
