I felt that the overall plot of this one was more impactful than the story itself. Whenever I read or hear someone talk about this book, they will, without fail, mention the plot and the setup and the key takeaways. What's lost from the novel, and why this one lost a couple stars for me, are all of the extra things that round out the characters. Perhaps that's the point though - he becomes as flat as the caricature he created.

Really funny in the most discouraging way because it’s true. Kinda just watching this man’s life fall apart as his
mother deals with dementia, he learns of his father’s affair, his sister is murdered, and a book meant to make him money, a representation of industry tone-deaf racism, becomes wildly successful. Watching Thelonious depersonalize into “Stagg” as he battles the disappointment and hopelessness of life

My only real complaint with this book is that the section from “Fuck” takes over most of it.

Incredible

This is the book that the Oscar-nominated film "American Fiction" was based on. I'm grateful to the movie because it made me aware of Percival Everett. Not sure how I missed him all these years, but I've now read and loved two of his books and can't wait to read more. "American Fiction" is a story of a frustrated professor and author who writes a purposefully bad novel about the stereotypical "Black" experience, driven by the fact that a similar book he loathes has become a best-seller and that the market clamors for "authentically Black" writing. Of course, publishers love his book, a producer buys the movie rights, and his alter-ego becomes famous.
