3.5 stars. For a change of pace this was A surprisingly delightful YA novel about life after death in Elsewhere.

Interesting concept, but flat writing.

Cute!!

This is a cute little book about what is important in life: the value of relationships and not the quantity of years, or amount of achievements, or accumulation of wealth. Lizzie is a girl of 15 who who dies in a hit and run accident and finds the afterlife, called Elsewhere, not what she expected. After mourning for her life on Earth for a time, she begins to absorb the lessons that Elsewhere is teaching her through some new relationships and her "life" is enriched.

This is a completely clean YA novel, so clean in fact that it is appropriate for middle grade too, with a good lesson. I marked it 3 instead of 4 stars because parts of it are just a bit too juvenile even for YA. Zevin is one of my favorite authors however, and she does a great job developing relationships and character building. I am glad that she writes for a wide range of audiences from adult to middle grade. Super easy read.

If you've ever thought of reading The Lovely Bones, DON'T. Read this instead.

This was a profoundly beautiful and inspiring read that was still light-hearted and entirely enjoyable. This is everything that I wanted The Lovely Bones to be and everything it wasn't.

I didn't give it a full five star rating, because I still felt a bit off about the subject. I just think reading about the "after-life" and death for extended periods of time makes me uncomfortable. While some readers may enjoy that, it's not something I particularly look for in my reading.

Gabrielle Zevin is incredibly talented, and I can't wait to read more of her work in the new year.

The premise is fascinating and yet the actual story falls flat- lots of plot holes and hastily solved storylines, little character development and a whole lot of whining from our main character. I loved Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow so much I had high hopes for this one, but it just wasn’t engaging for me.
