I am stuck between giving Elsewhere 3 stars or 4 stars so I'm going to just give it a 3.5.
I am very in between about this. I loved the premises and the way it was handled in the beginning but I would have loved to see a more in-depth look at Elsewhere.
Also it was very depressing for me much more than anything. The aging backwards thing just made me really sad and the thought of her having no chance at a long life lived one way made me very sad.
I did like the ending. and the plot. I wasn't too invested in the characters.
I found myself only really reading to learn more about Zevin's take on the afterlife.

I continue to wonder what it says about me that this was my favorite book growing up. The romance is way weirder at 27 than it was at 13.
I liked her novel The Storied Life of AJ Fikry, so I figured I'd try Elsewhere. I didn't make it through. Though it is an easy, quick read, it felt like a waste of time. It is a nicer version of The Lovely Bones (a book I despised) with a pleasant version of essentially limbo but with similarly childish "observations" of her loved ones on earth where she wants them to mourn her forever. The lead is just too much of a teenager for me to not roll my eyes at her at every turn. This may play better with an actual young adult reader.
It starts off weird and I was thinking "seriously? dumbest idea ever." But it ended up being really cute and I teared up a few times towards the end.

I had a bit of trouble to get into that book. Even if I think that it was meant to be that way, I felt a little lost as first. After that, I enjoyed the story, even if it was not for me the bit book crush that some of my blogging friends had.
The author created an interesting world in Elsewhere. There were cool ideas and interesting stuff. Me, probably because of my real life job, I saw a kind of metaphor about the mourning process. When a bad thing happens (not necessarily death) a person have to change their goals because some of those will just never happen. I found that part really good.
I was not really attached to the characters and had trouble to believe in the relationships. I felt that everything was just "on the surface" and that things were going really fast sometimes. I liked the principle but found the story itself was a bit simple.
A good read but not a great read for me!

I’d say a solid 3.5 stars! Cute book! Very different than what I normally read. Quick and easy read.
