This was such a fun read!! I am a sucker for anything post-apocalyptic, so this had me interested right from the start. I thoroughly enjoyed the audio and the narrator did such a good job switching back and forth between accents. While there wasn't a big "shock factor" in the reveal for me, I did enjoy the build up and story overall.

What a great read!?! This read combines speculative fiction with family connectedness and climate change into one read.

This one is more about the characters than the collapse itself - the end of the world is more a setting than a plot device. A lot of the story is told in memory, and while I didn’t always feel attached to the characters, I did like the big twist and wished more of the book had focused on that backstory.
The pacing felt slow for me, and the ending wrapped up a little too neatly, but I loved the mom’s survival guide inserts. I thought those parts were clever and heartfelt. The author’s version of a dystopian America was interesting too, even if I wanted more of it.
If you’re looking for a quieter, more personal take on family, betrayal, and survival (rather than a full-on apocalypse story), this could work really well for you.

Thank you to Net Galley for sending me the alc of this book! I enjoyed this book, but it didnt seem like I could fully get to know all of the characters even though I was in their perspective.
There were a lot of different things happening at once and at times it felt a little all over the place. I loved the journal entries and reddit conversations. I wish there were more journal entries and "surviving the apocalypse".
At times it felt real and like something that would happen in real life, which made it interesting for me, but what was happening in the book didnt make it feel "apocalyptic" enough for me.
As for the audiobook itself, the narrator did good for the overall outcome, but I will say that some of the accents seemed different at times. It seemed sometimes that the same character had a different type of accent which threw me off at parts.

This one was just okay for me. Based on the title and description, I was expecting a darker, more post-apocalyptic or dystopian horror story. Instead, it leaned much more into the family-drama genre, with only light touches of the end-of-the-world elements.
I did enjoy the characters, they were likable and had some fun moments. Although I believe the story wrapped up a little too neatly for my taste. I was hoping for more grit, more chaos, and more of the survival tension that the premise seemed to promise.
If you go into it knowing it’s more about family dynamics than apocalyptic horror, you might enjoy it more than I did.
Thank you to NetGalley and Hachette Audio for the ALC in exchange for my honest thoughts.

While I enjoyed what this novel was, the more this novel really just pissed me off actually. like for the only black characters to be made out to be the victims and to be angry. and then it turns out that it was literally just her white ass brother . like there was no other option? and then the black character, who one of the sisters fall in love with, she got mad at him because he wouldn’t help her even though he had his own issues? like be so foreal right now. that took me out of the book actually.

I think the messed up stuff people do in reality is the reason I rarely read things so based in it. The horrors that humanity, without anyone else's influence, can inflict upon itself skeeve me out. Least you can get some good advice on how to survive some issues in Hollie Overton's "A Mother's Guide to the Apocalypse" (out 19 August 2025).
If you know the world is ending what would you do? Olivia Sullivan can see the end coming and prepares for it, wanting to make sure her daughters are taken care of. Too bad she died in the beginning of the end. But her daughters find her guide years later, a guide their father never mentioned but used to make sure they were ready. Well the guide and the note from her mother's friend claiming to know where she is, wonder what that is all about.
Narrated by Eleanor Caudill, the casual reveal of information to flummox the English in a terrible situation was excellent
Reasons to read:
-Tired of people pointing out the rather obvious feature you share with siblings
-Hey a family with a lot more baggage than most other families
-Some solid advice about water purification
-Comeuppance against some people who just suck
Cons:
-Getting folks to explain a situation and not let it fester for a couple of days would have solved a good chunk of the situation
