Wasn't in the right mood for this book and then had to return it to the library, but it actually looks like something I'd really enjoy.

A beautiful book, but I had a hard time getting into the story of Alexander Von Humboldt and am not sure if the first-person narration was useful in showing the impact he has had on the world. The book dragged in sections and it didn't feel to have any narrative thrust. I didn't really get a sense of what an adventure it must have been to go trekking around the world and to make so many discoveries. I am, admittedly, not really interested in general science or botany, so the subject matter wasn't immediately appealing.

The illustrations and collages are truly the backbone of The Adventures of Alexander von Humboldt. It was incredible to bring his old diaries and novels to life in such an informative yet exciting way - seeing his treks across South America interspersed with his ideas on politics, slavery, and evolution. This book is truly magic!
