inspiring relaxing tense fast-paced

I finally forced myself to finish a book by Hemingway. Not sure why people praise his writing. His plot seems to focus on hopping from cafe to cafe to hotel and eating/drinking with frenemies.

Damn, these people drink a lot.

I'm catching up on my Hemingway, having really enjoyed The Old Man and the Sea and A Farewell to Arms. For me, The Sun Also Rises is a notch below these two. With so much of the book centered on "Where are we eating? Let's have another drink," it gets close to tedious at times. Still a good read, however, and the fiesta in Pamplona is memorable.

bill is a top lad, harris is a top top lad

Yet another novel by Hemingway which does nothing but bore me. I totally loathed reading this book, and so glad I finished it. Despicable (or should I say "rotten"?) characters, with no means to an end, and except for describing the bullfight traditions and Spanish views, I personally did not find any value in its writing. Nothing seemingly important happens, perhaps, until the second half of the book, nevertheless it feels the entire story is coming in and getting out of hotels and bars, drinking and drinking again. Too bad. I don't recommend it. If there's any subtle or hidden meaning to this book, I think it's too deep for me.

I had to read this one twice to get it. The first time around I thought the writing was simplistic and the story was irrelevant. The 2nd time was for a class I was taking and I learned that I had to read between the lines to understand what Hemingway was trying to say. It's a story of privileged people who don't know how to be happy. They seemingly have everything but are empty on the inside. I'm fascinated more with Hemingway the man but not so much his writing.

while i acknowledge how unqualified i am to criticize Hemingway, as far as twentieth-century expatriate books go it didn’t hold a candle to Giovanni’s Room, not to mention its consistent antisemitism. story-wise, just not my favorite but the ending redeemed it some.
