Not Your Ex's Hexes

April Asher

3.81 AVERAGE

Cross my heart and hex me silly, the 2nd book in the Supernatural Singles series from April Asher was a joy. The perfect witchy read for the fall weather and with characters you couldn't help falling for. A stubborn witch and a half demon vet? Count me in. I devoured this book and had a ton of fun doing it. I will be patiently awaiting book 3.

More abrupt of an ending than I prefer.

I actually really enjoyed this book, it was a warm cute romance, like if the hallmark channel ran a Halloween special and they used the word “f*ck”. I don’t know if that makes sense but it’s the best way I know how to describe the way this book made me feel. It’s not a fade to black romance but I could easily see it being made for a tv movie. And my point in saying that is that it’s not bad at all —maybe I just read too much dark romance and this just seemed really warm to me.

It felt a little campy at times, like calling people “bwitch”. Or using names like “Mr. Grumpy-pants”. But that’s just a personal preference and me being nit picky about my personal taste. Point is though, that’s all the “negative” (if you can even call it that) that I have about this book.

I really loved both Rose and Damien, and am PINING for an Olive x Bax story. But I digress. This is a one night stand to lovers. With a lot of wholesome supernatural thrown in. I think the world is cool and the supernatural community and norm community makes for an entertaining read!

I received this book as an eARC from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to the publishers and author for the opportunity to read it! Can’t wait to get a physical copy!

I absolutely adored this book and devoured it in record time. Not only are the main characters delightful, but the storyline was well paced.

Rosew is one of the Maxwell triplets, powerful in their town. She is feeling adrift after her oldest triplet sibling finally discovered her magical abilities and became Prima. Rose had been filling in until then and is now trying to find her purpose. After an attempt to liberate some horses leads to community service, Rose is surprised to find the man she "met" in a bar's back room is the veteranarian with whom she will be working.

Damian is new to town, but had been college roommates with several town members. He remembers his unclothed encounter with Rose very well, but due to a hex placed on him years ago, he must remain aloof to keep others safe. He will need to remind himself of that....a lot...

This is such a fun series! I liked this one more than the first with more enjoyable FMC and MMC. I wish supernatural romcoms were more abundant than they are!

Loved the 2nd book in this series following the Maxwell triplets. I really enjoyed Rose as the FMC and her being badass, stubborn and all around fun to follow, Damian took the grumpy to another level, and at times, like the first book, got a little lost with all the different terms, but overall a very good witchy read!

This book was just not for me, even though I expected to enjoy it. Independent female lead, grumpy loner male lead, a little bit of witchcraft... what's not to love?

Plenty, at least for me. The female lead, Rose, seemed bland and not very nice. Perhaps I would have felt differently if I had read the first book in the series, but I wasn't really invested in her journey of self-discovery - and although much was made, at the start of the book, of Rose's need to find herself, that need rarely seemed to drive the plot.

The supernatural world of the novel was also not my favorite. It felt overly elaborate and somewhat random - again, perhaps because I didn't read the first book - and new rules and classes of being appeared apparently at random.

Still, this wasn't a bad book. It was well-written. Damian, the male lead, was a great character. The ending despite feeling as scattershot as the other magical elements of the story, was compelling and emotionally resonant.

[I received a complimentary ARC from NetGalley and the publisher. Opinions are my own.]

Thank you so much to SMP Romance and Netgalley for providing an advanced copy of this! All thoughts and opinions are still my own.

After reading and enjoying book 1, I knew I wanted to try continuing on with this series. I love the concept of powerful triplet witches in a contemporary/paranormal world. However, this series, while fun in concept, doesn't seem to deliver the way that I want.

Our heroine in this book has spent her life preparing to take over as the matriarch of the witches. However, when her older sister finally comes into her power, our heroine finally gets to decide her own future. Unfortunately she has no idea what she wants that future to look like.

In her attempt to figure it out, she finds herself doing community service with her grumpy, half demon, one night stand. What she doesn't know, is that the hero is cursed to lose his soul if he ever falls in love.

I loved the concept of this romance. The layer of forbiddance created so much tension to their budding romance. I also love a tortured hero with a secret soft center - which Damian definitely fit!

But I just felt like this book never quite landed the delivery. There were plenty of good moments, but nothing that ever left me breathless or desperate for more.

The characters, while fine, weren't overly complex or deeply developed. Instead it feels like everyone fits a role and purpose. The sisters, in particular, almost feel like caricatures of their given roles.

I think this book, and series as a whole, is fun and lighthearted. But not something that will stand out in my mind. Because of that, I don't think it's a series I'll be continuing with either.

If you're in the market though for more lighthearted contemporary, witchy stories this is still one worth checking out. Despite my lackluster feelings on it, I don't think there is anything outright wrong with this book. I was just left wanting more from it.

Love, love, LOVE! I just truly love this series.

Cute! I was excited to read this after the 1st book. Hopefully Olive’s love story is next.
