Not Your Ex's Hexes

April Asher

3.81 AVERAGE

First, a big thank you to NetGalley and April Asher for the e-arc of Not Your Ex's Hexes, the second book about the Maxwell sisters! I love a good witchy romance book, and throw in a half-demon and this book delivers.

After Rosie is free from marrying Pepé Le Pee-Yew and is no longer Prima Apparent (thanks to her eldest triplet's magic finally making an appearance) Rose is free to find out who she is and what she wants to do. Except she has no clue what that is because she's been training to be the next Prima all her 30-something years. Rose shakes things up by trying to be a little bit reckless, which just leads her having to complete community service hours at the local animal rescue/vet hospital.
Enter the vet she has to work with: half-demon reformed bad-boy Damian. And the only Supernatural Rose has ever had a one-night stand with. Their mutual attraction has them agreeing to a friends with benefits agreement with one condition: No strings, no feelings, no actual relationship. (But come on, when has that ever really worked?)
Rose starts to learn more about herself; what she likes to do and fulfills her. But also that she might be falling for a certain half-demon. Damian gets a closer look at the life he left ages ago, and he realizes that if he really loves Rose he might need to let her go or else he'll lose everything.

Not Your Ex's Hexes is full of witty remarks and banter. Sometimes it felt like too much (the endearment "little witch" became a "little much") and forced teasing instead of deeper conversations. This book is dual POV, which is almost as necessary to me in a romance book as coffee is to my morning routine. I loved reading Damian's view and how he struggled with his feelings for Rose, the commitments to his animals, and then also making sure he wasn't going to fall under the hex. Besides the lack of deeper conversation, my only other issue with the book was the ending. I feel like there was so much buildup the whole time that Damian couldn't fall in love, and then finding the solution wasn't terribly exciting for me. Like it didn't give me butterflies. The spicy scenes DID give me the spicy butterflies though, so mission accomplished there! I still 100% recommend giving this book a read, especially if you like witchy romances and the first book, Not the Witch You Wed!

Not Your Ex's Hexes was a cute follow-up to Not the Witch You Wed. April Asher has created a magical, supernatural world that is fun to be in. While this book didn't wow me as much as the first one, it was still enjoyable.

This book is the story of the middle triplet, Rose, and begins after she steps down as Prima Apparent to let Violet take her rightful role. Rose is now excited to be able to discover what she wants to do with her life without rules and regulations weighing her down. After a misguided attempt to rescue some malnourished horses, she ends up with community service hours at the animal sanctuary, that just happens to be owned by the sexy half demon, Damian, who she had an exciting evening with a few months ago. They are immediately attracted to each other but must also deal with Damian's hex that prevents him from falling in love.

I thought this book contained a few too many elements. Rose was all over the place with trying to find herself, and what she ended up doing totally baffles me because I thought there was a clear strength in another field. Damian was an interesting character. I loved the grumpy vibe he had going on, and his chemistry with Rose was spicy. He had commitment hang-ups but decent reasons for them. I do wish the hex would have been a little more explored because it felt too vague to really make me concerned. The world itself was fun. I love the magical realm inside a modern day NYC, where supernatural beings and "norms" coexist. I do think reading the glossary at the end would be helpful prior to reading the book.

If you are in the mood for a lighthearted, paranormal read, I would suggest this series. While the first book was stronger for me, I was still entertained by this follow up. I am excited for Olive's book featuring Bax, which was set up well in this book.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for the e-copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

3.75 rounded up.

I liked the two MCs, and it was exactly what I expected from this book.

There was more plot than I thought there would be and some spice. The hearts of both main characters were good, which made you want to cheer for them.

should have just reread go hex yourself

Cute witchy vibes spooky season read. I’ll be honest, this book lost me for a bit in the middle there, “pantsless subway rides”

Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC.

This book picks up with Rose Maxwell joy long after the first book ends. We see Linc and Vi do their bonding ceremony and Rose figure out her shit. I will say that I never liked Rose that much, but she was a good character to follow here, especially with Damian and the animal sanctuary.

Damian was a fantastic character that had a lot to work through but I do think that the author put more details into book one and their backstory and just assumed that everyone will like this book based on that. I just felt like I didn’t connect to the characters here as much.

I liked how she found her own path, but it was a little cringey. She also fell into it very fast and a little unnatural. I hate how he fires her and does not appreciate what she does.

I absolutely loved this book. Rose was such a realistic and beautiful character, one I found myself gravitating toward. Watching Rose find herself, was such a validating experience, because it was one that we often find ourselves exploring. I was able to connect with her on a level that went beyond the surface, that it made me so proud to see her find a place where she could live for herself. It was so refreshing watching her be brave and take charge of her life, when she had so often found herself unsure of where she was going in life, with all the changes that she had going on.
This book is completely worth picking up and reading. For anyone who has never truly felt a concrete purpose in life, it will be such a validating experience, full of undeniable chemistry and witty banter. In short, you need to read this book.
