Not Your Ex's Hexes

Not the Witch You Wed was one of my favorite reads of 2022 so I was so excited to get this ARC and while I liked it, I think it missed some of the chemistry and spark of its predecessor. There was a lot going on so the romance felt a bit tacked on and they didn't have as much foundation to their relationship

Damian is a half-demon veterinarian at a local animal sanctuary. Rose is forced to work at this animal sanctuary as part of community service hours she has to meet.

Damian and Rose also had a one night stand not too long ago. Did we mention that Damien has a hex on him that will be dangerous if he falls in love? So they enter into a FWB situation to prevent feelings and scratch the itch they both have.

I would give this a solid 3.5 stars - it was a cute story and while it had burn & spice, it also had a good plot. This would be a book that I would definitely recommend for a Halloween/fall season read.

Thank you NetGalley & St Martins Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Grump + Sassy = amazing

This book picks up right where book 1 left off. So, you'll need to read book 1 to understand what is going on. Rose was Prima, but now she is just another witch learning and accepting her new life. She runs into the new hot demon vet, who, of course, is a massive grump because he prefers animals to humans. And that's where sparks fly. I swear, she kept him on his toes. And well, us too. I didn't know what she was going to do next. Great story. Of course, the end was silly.

This one was meh which is disappointing after having thoroughly enjoyed the first one. Took to long to get interesting and then it was chaotic until the end where I found myself skimming through sentences from anticlimactic happenings and boredom. Sigh. Oh well.

Not Your Ex’s Hexes is a fun, lighthearted read, though not without its flaws. The story centers on Rose, a witch trying to find her way after stepping down from the Supernatural Council, and Damian, a half-demon running an animal sanctuary. Their chemistry is undeniable, though their romance feels bumpy at times. Damian’s overprotectiveness and dismissive attitude towards Rose’s ideas were frustrating, but thankfully, this is resolved later in the book.

While the humor and banter are highlights, they can sometimes feel overdone, especially during more suspenseful moments where it detracts from the tension. Additionally, for readers unfamiliar with the first book in the series, there are noticeable gaps in the worldbuilding that can make things feel disjointed.

Despite these issues, the story’s charm, witty dialogue, and heartwarming animal sanctuary setting make it an enjoyable read. A solid 3-star book with fun moments, though a tighter focus and less banter would have elevated it further.
