I so desperately wanted to love this book. It has everything, and I mean everything, that I love. Urban fantasy, hot vet MMC, paranormal romance, and it's part of an interconnected series. So I was totally crushed when this didn't follow through.
This is the second book in the Supernatural Series. I thought the first one was just fine. Nothing special. Again, it was filled with tropes that I normally love, but there was just something missing. But I often find that authors can sometimes be nervous with the first book, and often the second one in an interconnected series is significantly better (same with standalones sometimes). But alas, I was wrong. I just found Rose to be slightly immature and Damian too much of a cookie-cutter MMC. And I didn't really get their chemistry.
But I am an absolute hypocrite, and I will probably read the third book in this series. It's kind of one of those things where you know it's probably not going to get better, but you can't help going back to it anyway.

I like the grumpy/ sunshine vibe but didn’t really understand how their conflict was resolved and the ending was very sudden. I also look forward to the next sister finding her love, but I wish the epilogue was more focused on the pair from this book, not setting it up for the next one
Thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for an advanced copy.
(Kind of) enemies to lovers, then FWB to partners, featuring a grumpy half-demon animal lover and girly good-girl witch/pop culture lover. Who also loves animals, of course. And, hilariously, Hocus Pocus, boozy ice cream, and weighted blankets. So relatable! Runner up trope is "mates", when in reference to shifters and some of other supernaturals, and kind of with the idea of soulmates in general for everyone.
The whole FWB time is basically them coming to terms with the fact they just want an actual relationship with each other. It's cute at times, as they do couple-y stuff together, but then frustratingly still keeping the will-they/won't-they vibes. Warning that Damian also has those possessive tendencies (that I hate) that became the go-to in romance these last 20 years, but it's heavily sidelined and he's mostly non-toxic about it. Of course there's some turmoil regarding a soul curse, and it's all so fairy tale-esque it feels a littly goofy, but this is a cutesy story so it fit.
I appreciate the surprisingly amount of focus on animals and non-profits in general. Asher creates a world of supernaturals that is surprisingly and welcomingly woke as well. It's mostly tangents and lore-building, but given this is a series I think there's potential for a future LGBTQ+ protagonist/couple if that's something that interests you - because April Asher is a very enjoyable and easy-to-read writer
Following that, let me fully admit I never read the first in this series, [b:Not the Witch You Wed|57693468|Not the Witch You Wed (Supernatural Singles, #1)|April Asher|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1636366640l/57693468._SY75_.jpg|90371661] (lol - but it's been on my to-read since it came out!). I was slightly worried that would hinder my enjoyment of this book but Not Your Ex's Hexes can be read on its own just fine. The two books' protagonists are sisters and the first book's plot is briefly explained near the beginning (not all at once, of course - Asher is a better writer than that).
I don't read a lot of romance but sometimes they catch my eye, like this one did. I'm so glad this one wasn't a let-down - in fact, I plan on reading the first book soon, and following this series!
Not Your Ex's Hexes is a super cute, bubbly urban fantasy/modern romance.
If you like this series, I highly recommend checking out MaryJanice Davidson's [b:Undead and Unwed|421129|Undead and Unwed (Undead, #1)|MaryJanice Davidson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1298768655l/421129._SY75_.jpg|2523603] series. The vibes align strongly!
