Totally adequate NYCer contemporary supernatural romance. Jaded demon veterinarian + witch trying to get it together.

2 POVs, characters are mid 30s, spicy, supernatural violence, rescued animals

The plot on these is always stronger than the vibe. Characters are all very fun.

Setup is cute, but there's a lot of poop talk upfront. Prose has a bit of stutter-stop throughout, but has sweetspots. Dialogue is usually pretty strong.

[Ending pace]

The couple has problems until the very end- there is no moment of peace or payoff for the relationship. I think you get like, two sentences post resolution of the main hurdle and I'm still not wildly clear on what happened with that plotline.

I followed everything else but the main relationship resolution was lore heavy wo lore explanation.

This was an adorable grumpy/sunshine novel. I really love a grumpy veterinarian. It's so easy to fall in love with a man caring for animals.

Trained her whole life to be Prima, Rose Maxwell has ceded the title to her sister. Now she’s at odds with what to do with her life. After a serious misstep leads to her serving community service at an animal sanctuary, she finds herself attracted to her boss, half human, half demon, Damian Adams. Who also happens to be a previous one-night stand. Both agree they’re up for a friends-with-benefits only relationship.

This was entertaining, even though I didn’t feel the pull between the two MCs until almost halfway through the book. It wasn’t high on spice or witty banter. It was a cute story, though, and the perfect follow-up to Asher’s earlier book, Not the Witch You Wed. Perfect for Valentine’s Day reading.
