Not a lot happens in the 1st comic, but still the handdrawn style is beautiful and the simple first story of Hilda is fun.
Entertaining story, excellent vocab for kids, and lovelyingly detailed illustrations.

Dieser erste Comic der Hilda Reihe eröffnet den Erzählton der Geschichtenserie rund um eine abenteuerlustige Protagonistin mit fabelhaften Freund:innen in einer aufregenden Welt. Dieser Teil ist zur Einführung gedacht und hält ein kleines Abenteuer zum Hineinschnuppern bereit. Da ich den dritten Band durch den Comic Day bereits gelesen habe, kannte ich die Welt schon ein Stück weit. Nichtsdestoweniger mochte ich auch diesen Ausflug nach Trollberg oder vielmehr die ländliche Gegend rund um Trollberg. Zwar gefallen mir jene Comics etwas besser, die sich schon auf intensiverer Ebene den Mysterien der Welt widmen, doch war auch diese Einführung sehr gemütlich und schön.

A lot shorter than I was expecting, but a nice mini Hilda experience! I think the later graphic novels get longer, so that’ll be nice!

Toch maar weer deze Hilda strips een kansje geven, ik zag ze toevallig (het is echt heel moeilijk ze hier te vinden) in de bibliotheek die ik gisteren bezocht. Ik moet zeggen dat ik het echt superleuk vond om te lezen! Hilda gaat lekker in haar tent kamperen als het regent, ze maakt tekeningen van alles wat ze tegenkomt, en daar zit dan ook een trol bij. Tja, haar idee van een bel was, net als in de animatieserie, erg leuk gedaan, maar misschien moet je dan nog steeds niet in slaap vallen. Ik vond het wel zielig voor de trol en ik vond het dan ook lief wat Hilda deed voor hem. We ontmoeten ook Hilda's moeder (die echt geen zin heeft in nog meer rotstekeningen van haar dochter) en het houtmannetje. De tekeningen vond ik toch net iets minder, ik vind de art in de animatie en de latere delen net iets mooier. Maar de wereld en die te zien is geweldig. Wat een fantasie, en ik wil er maar al te graag wonen. Leuke laatste pagina's met wat extras. Ik ga snel maar het andere deel dat ik mee heb genomen ook lezen.
The Hildafolk series begins with Hilda and the Troll, a simple, charming tale of plucky girl Hilda in a magical Scandinavian countryside. Luke Pearson's art immediately jumps out with an appealingly cute style, giving the world every bit of the whimsy Hilda herself is in search of. It's a joy to look at and will keep you returning just to look at it. Surprisingly, there's some gore in the form of an illustration within a book Hilda reads where a troll decapitates someone, and a giant says "Damn it" in one instance.
The plot isn't much: Hilda goes drawing rocks and encounters a troll and has to get home safely. It's cute enough. Hilda is a very appealing heroine though, a girl with an appetite for exploration and a trusty sketpad to draw the unusual sights she finds. Hilda's accompanied by an animal she names Twig, a small fox with antlers. She has a mother but the mother has very little role. A strange being called the Wood Man sometimes shows up, often barging into Hilda's home uninvited to lie on the floor and nothing they do can make him leave.
The book is unfortunately quite erased; there are no characters of color nor LGBT characters.
