One of the most interesting 19th C. Books I have read in some time! The devil, doppelgängers, murder, early psychology, frame narratives, and more. It has its own eccentricities, as many books of the time do, but on the whole it is fascinating. In this I see the threads that would create fight club, Mister b. Gone, Jekyll and Hyde etc. I can’t believe I only heard about it recently.

Dark, twisty, and sometimes genuinely creepy.
Who doesn't love a critique of religious extremism, really?
"There is not an error into which a man can fall which he may not press Scripture into his service as proof of the probity of" (p. 142)
I also learned some great putdowns and plan to begin right away calling people "mildew," "stinkard," and "Mr. Satan."

this is very interesting but not an exquisite work of art... feels like a precursor to Dorian Gray or Jekyll & Hyde
