It will take me a while to formulate a coherent review for this book. In the meantime, I will be shoving copies of it at my friends and urging them to read it. This book does so much in a small amount of pages, with vivid worldbuilding, characters, and abilities. If you have a chance, check out the audio version. The narration is quite possibly the best I've heard.

So incredible, I don’t think I can write an adequate review. This is fantasy but also more than that. This book is so much more than creative and devastating world building. This is an exploration of humanness at its extremity. And a way of exploring enforced servitude of masses of people without writing historical fiction. And in a way, N. K. Jemison definitely could do more with a fantasy placement than she could have with historical or literary fiction.

This book was incredible fantasy, but also incredibly impactful on my understanding of the real world. And for that, this book deserves all the praise it has rightfully received. I’m glad I finally got to it.
