A truly great American novel, The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of the Joads, a family of sharecroppers who migrate to California during the Great Depression. It was shocking to me how relevant and striking Steinbecks message still is over 50 years later. The writing has a style that feels elevated and artistic, but still approachable. A must read for any classics fans

I absolutely can't stand Steinbeck's writing style. I despise it. This star rating is for that. I do adore the summaries those are so interesting. I like the plot when I don't have to suffer through all the detail and symbolism. It's disgusting, I absolutely hate it. ugh. (I know it's personal preference but I needed to rant)

Read this for uni. Don’t know why but the way this book was written was just so boring. I tried to read it but had to switch to audiobook instead because I just kept on falling asleep… I can understand why this is a classic and why it was so important for the american people during the 30’s but unfortunately it wasn’t for me.

I really think I'm just not meant to be a Steinbeck fan. But I'm ok with that. The characters weren't overly interesting and the story dragged on til I didn't really care anymore.

This is a classic that has been on my radar for a long while now.

The book was a really interesting read. It was heartbreaking to hear about what many of these people went through and was an interesting look at how and potentially why people treat each other the way they do. It was also an important part of history to learn about. The book was melancholy and the poetic writing style supported that. I can appreciate why this is a classic and the writing skill behind the book.

It was a slightly lower rated book for me for a couple reasons. The first was that it dragged in spots for me, especially at the beginning. I also felt there were parts that were very sensationalized (what was that ending??). And there were things in the book that felt "straw manned".

The main thing in the book that detracted from my personal enjoyment was the amount of swearing and sexual content. There isn't any description, but the way sex is discussed or mentioned is often vulgar. I understand why the author did it, but for me personally, it really bothered me and took away from the other parts of the book.
