i think it’s such an open and raw view
of what it’s like being a woman.

I spent two years trying to get my hands on this collection in the U.S., only to give up until I wandered into a bookstore in London and snagged the last copy on the shelf. Charly Cox is an instagram and radio phenom, and reminds me of the prolific instagram poet @MaryOliversDrunkCousin, who I adore.
This collection is broken into 4 sections: “she must be in love,” “she must be mad,” “she must be fat,” and “she must be an adult.” The strongest poems are the bookends, with my favorites being:
  • expectations
  • goldman sachs
  • mourning routine
  • E1W 3SS/Billy

Evokes:
sandy hotel sheets
The flash of cold air that hits you when you leave a bar
Delaying turning your phone on airplane mode on a flight until the very last minute, desperately hoping that your vacation hookup texts you before you leave

I almost gave this a 3.5 but there are just some poems in this that I relate to so much that it makes up for the ones I don't quite understand. This book made me cry. I feel as though Charly Cox truly understand my depression and the ways I have felt about myself in the past. It's nice to be understood.

This book was beautiful and raw in ways I needed to read. I would highly recommend this book.
