The main character has a bad case of not-like-other-girls-itis. How are you going to get mad at men underestimating you for being a woman then turn around deride all other women as shallow and stupid?? And this behaviour is never challenged in the narrative. Also I’m still cringing at how the MMC talks about how much “realer” the FMC is because she doesn’t wear makeup.
The romance is rushed and the plot unsatisfying. Oh and no one at all seems to question the ethics of body snatching? When one of the FMC’s patients die, they bury him instead of dissecting him for research because they cared about him as a person, but that doesn’t seem to prompt any thoughts about how the families of the people whose bodies they stole, dissected and disposed of might feel.

SPOILER FREE REVIEW AHEAD!
This book ladies and gents, has it all. Intellectual intrigue, mystery, adventure and romance. Well written and a fast paced read. I adored the main character - strong willed, intelligent, independent, ambitious. If you’re looking for a book with a strong female lead that challenges many typical romance cliches, this is it. This story features a cisgender heterosexual romance - it’s got elements of historical fiction, true crime, mystery, romance, and horror all rolled into one. The pacing is slower in the beginning but it picks up speed after the legwork is done of setting the stage. Hazel and Jack’s romance is swoonworthy and this will leave you wanting more! I’m going to be looking into the author’s other works and she’s found a new fan! I’ll be reading the follow up!

This book really had me enthralled for the first 90%! I was expecting to be leaving a 5-star review. And then the last 15 or so pages happened and I felt immense disappointment and let down. For me, the enthralling piece of this book was this ongoing mystery that Hazel and Jack were entwined in. The unexpected switch to a fantasy book in the last 10% killed that mystery for me. I am a lover of fantasy books, but it just didn't fit here. It felt like a cop out to wrapping up this exciting mystery and uncertainty about what would happen to Hazel and Jack. It's like when you get to the end of a mystery novel and you're like, "wow! Never saw that coming!" Except, this time it wasn't exciting because OF COURSE you didn't see that ending coming...there was not a single hint up to that point that there would be a fantastical explanation to the mystery.

Really enjoyed this book. Very different to my usual and I have ordered the next one.
Enjoyed this way more than I thought I would...ending in my opinion let it down slightly but I still enjoyed.
Totally hooked up from this story. A bit of a slow beginning, but after a while, I was unable to put it down.
It's a lovely YA historical fiction set at the end of the Nineteenth Century that mixes mystery, medicine, and women's historical struggles to be more than a wife.

Just okay for me. I was expecting the romance to be a bigger part of the plot (“a love story” is literally in the title) but it wasn’t so that left me disappointed. The priority is following Hazel, a young girl in 1800s Scotland, as she studies to become a surgeon in a society where that isn’t an option for women. Overall the story was enjoyable, but nothing I think will stick with me. Still debating if I’m going to compete the duology.
