I wasn't quite sure how to rate this book. It took me an unexplainable 6 months to force my way through it, one story at a time, and though I found most stories growing on me towards the end, that is when they would just cut off. Maybe I'm just too dumb to understand the metaphors or whatever but the stories all felt unfinished to me.

Office hours and Peking duck were probably the strongest stories in my opinion. This is my first time reading short stories and first time reading Ling Ma. Rating 3 stars because I’m on the fence? Some beautiful prose that made me pause and reread in awe, however I also felt frustrated at the lack of narrative drive / conclusion and any sense of real cohesion between the stories. A little wacky and I love an imaginative tale, but i don’t know if I would recommend this to someone.
