I like the characters and the basic storyline of this series of books, although I am not a religious person. This series is geared more towards those who are strong believers, so as a non-believer I felt a little hit over the head with religion...but I knew it would go that way going in, so I cannot fault the author. Either way, it was still a good read.

I loved this. It was sheet and showed the beauty of everyday like. The beauty of what a small community could be. The love, the sorrow, the adventure of life and that it doesn't always go as you plan. I really felt what the author wanted to convey.

First and foremost, this isn't the TV show. If you're like me and you came from the Hallmark, feel-good school teacher loves a Mountie show, you need to leave your desire to draw connections at the door. Both are great in their own way but they really are not the same at all.

I enjoyed reading this as a short Christian Romance and while I am looking forward to reading the rest of the series, it's been a few months since I read this one and I keep pushing the second novel off to read other books. I think part of that is because I felt like this was a very self-contained novel and the ending resolved the story enough for me to wait on the next books.

The characters are a little flat but I expect for that to be resolved as we learn more about them throughout the next few books, and the writing is similarly stilted in places but not in a distracting way. The setting was simple but the places described were described well and could be pictured easily.

Alright, I’ll admit that I have a soft spot for the television series When Calls the Heart. It’s the only reason I read this book. The hair and costumes are a mess and the writing verges on cliche but I appreciate how uncomplicated and cheesy the tv show is. I like watching it when I’m sick.

The book on the other hand, is so boring. For me, that’s the biggest sin. Somehow, the religious themes was not the most tedious part of the book. The first person narration was not working for me. Being privy to Elizabeth Thatcher’s internal thoughts was a torment. For someone is described as practical and smart she does some truly dumb things.

The scenes and events read more like vignettes, rather than a whole complete story. The ‘romance’ which is supposedly a driving point of this book, is dull and unconvincing. I keep being told that Elizabeth is in love with Wynn but there was absolutely zero chemistry between them.

I can’t believe The Little House on the Prairie series, a series of books aimed at CHILDREN, has a more mature and satisfying depiction of frontier romance that this book aimed at adults.

Very clean and wholesome; When Calls the Heart follows a young proper woman who travels to the Canadian West to teach in a one room schoolhouse near her half brother. Instead of getting to stay with her brother however she is given an outpost over 100 miles away. She has to learn to fend for herself, manage kids who have never had schooling, and try not to get too lonely. She finds herself looking forward to seeing a strapping young man but when she finds out he's the father to one of her students she's a little heartbroken. She relies on her faith and her family to make it through the loneliness and doubt. i really like the setting and it's a quick and light read perfect for all ages.

This was a fun read simply for its wholesomeness. The plot is completely different from the TV show, but is similar to the story of Elizabeth's aunt Elizabeth in the movie. Elizabeth moves to the Canadian West to become a teacher in a small town. She grows attached to the children, has some adventures, and
Spoilerhas a mountie fall in love with her. She is disgusted at first because she thinks this man is married, but when she finds out his "wife" is really his sister, she falls in love with him too, and they live happily ever after.
