“But I refused to mope about for the evening. My little ritual with teacup, familiar chair, and a favorite Dickens story went a long way toward improving my outlook.”

When Calls the Heart is short, Christian historical romance fluff. If that's what you're looking for, you'll probably enjoy this. If you're looking for something more, this probably isn't for you. Actually, it might be a bit generous to call it a romance, as the love interest doesn't really show up until about 50% of the way through the book.

With that said, it's an easy and relatively enjoyable read. Elizabeth heads out to Western Canada for a teaching job and most of the book involves the day to day of getting settled in to the rugged frontier and her war on the mice in her home. Most of the conflict comes from a misunderstanding (though not exactly a miscommunication), so if that's something you're not a fan of, you may not like this, either.

Overall, it's sweet and cute, if not a little predictable.

I love the show and finally got the book to read. While there is a difference between the two, I still loved it! Heartwarming and even a few tearful moments. I can't wait to read the next one.

This book is like the literary equivalent of chicken noodle soup- comforting, homespun, and wholesome. I have mixed feelings about the TV series with the same name, but this book really is completely different. I cracked up at the mousetrap scene, and Elizabeth's misadventures with Wynn. (The synopsis on the back of the book totally spoils the first 90%, by the way.) Definitely a great read for when you're in the mood for something calming and slightly romantic.

Content: Squeaky clean.

This was a sweet book, not particularly well written, no big plot twists, just a sweet, innocent, Christian love story. The "church" and "bible" parts were probably the best written parts, thoughtful and not over done or cheesey. A good short wholesome book. And it left me wanting to read the next one in the series.
