This was a really good and quick Stephen King book. I like his shorter books like this because he is less likely to ramble and the stories tend to have better, well thought out endings. I raced through this one in 3 days and it had a good mix of horror, mystery, and just good storytelling. King always excels at writing from the perspective of a child/young adult and this was no exception. I didn’t give it 5 stars as I feel like the showdown between Jamie and Therriault could have been executed better.

This is one of King’s lighter, less gory novels. The narration is hilarious and buoyant. The storyline is one we’ve all read before but with King’s quick wit and ability to create a compelling story, it didn’t read as overdone. The ending took me by surprise in an abrupt way.

লিটারেরি এজেন্ট টিয়া কঙ্কলিন একজন সিঙ্গেল মাদার। ছেলে জেমি কঙ্কলিনকে নিয়ে বেশ সচ্ছল জীবন-যাপন করছিলো সে। দৃশ্যপটে বাবা না থাকলেও অন্য আট-দশটা বাচ্চাকাচ্চার মতো "প্রায়" সাধারণ দিনকাল কাটছিলো জেমির - একটি বিষয় ছাড়া। খুব অল্পবয়স থেকে নিজের মধ্যে একটি ক্ষমতা টের পায় জেমি। সে মৃত মানুষ দেখতে পায়। লেখকের ভাষায় "Not like that cinema with Bruce Willis in it" অর্থাৎ অন্যান্য যেসব এই ধরণের ঘটনা শোনা যায় তার থেকে জেমির বিষয়টা একটু ভিন্ন। সদ্য মৃত যাওয়া মানুষদেরকে দেখতে পায় জেমি এবং তাদের সাথে কথাবার্তা চালাতে পারে। সময় বাড়ার সাথে সাথে আস্তে আস্তে তাদের কথাবার্তা মলিন হয়ে আসে এবং তারপর তারা আর দেখা দেয় না।
প্রথমে তার এই "ক্ষমতা" তার মায়ের কাছে ছোট বাচ্চার নিছক কল্পনা বা হ্যালুসিনেশন মনে হয়। কিন্তু ধীরে ধীরে বিভিন্ন ঘটনা সচক্ষে দেখে বিশ্বাস হতে শুরু করে তার। জেমির নিজের কাছে পুরো ব্যাপারটা হয়তো অতোটা পীড়াদায়ক ছিল না - সময়ে সময়ে দুর্ঘটনায় মারা যাওয়া কিছু ক্ষতবিক্ষত ধরণের লাশ দেখে ভয় পাওয়া ছাড়া। সেটাও বদলে যেতে শুরু করলো একসময়। নিজের ক্ষমতার কারণে ক্রমাগত বিপাকে জড়িয়ে যেতে থাকলো জেমি কঙ্কলিন।

"Later" পড়ার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলাম গতো বছরের শেষ থেকে। বই পাবলিশের সময়েই এসে সেকেন্ড প্রফেশনাল পরীক্ষা পড়ে গেলো আমার, কিভাবে যে দাঁত কামড়ে সহ্য করেছি বিশেষত অন্যদের পড়তে দেখে নিজেও জানি না

Short, fun, and very entertaining. I would like to see King write more books with the main character, Jamie Conklin. Great character. The final “twist” revelation felt unnecessary and almost made me take away a star.
