I desperately wanted to love this series after hearing that it was a holy grail for some. Instead, the third book left me in an indifferent reading slump where I didn’t pick it up for a few days (much the same as the sequel).

The general premise, magic, and political systems were engaging but I’m left feeling underwhelmed.

This was a redemption tour for Theon, but also an arc of Tessa succumbing to apparent generational mental illness. Feminine rage is like crack to me, but the way Tessa is written is utterly insufferable. The FMC comes across as a petulant child throwing a tantrum, fancying herself the villain when instead she’s just a shitty person. The manner in which Tessa treats Axel and especially Luka is abhorrent (hurt people hurt people but truly what the fuck), and ignoring Auryon’s warnings and summoning the Hunters which directly leads to the death of hundreds of innocents absolutely finished Tessa for me.

I love Luka Mors, but watching him betray a lifelong chosen brotherhood broke my heart. Complicated bond etc, but it felt wrong for there to be so little loyalty between Luka and Theon after all the build up with the Guardian bond and general nature of a dragon.

Strong world building and richly complex side characters kept my heart in it, but I don’t know if I’ll be continuing with the fourth book. Someone tell me if Eviana ever rescues her daughter because I think that’s the only thing I remain invested in.

So much happens. So many emotional connections and blocks. Trying to do better than what is known. Trying to find what is true. Who is true in a world filled with villains and monsters.
side note It did make me happy Luka got more time on the page.

While I cheered Tessa on for taking back her power in the second book, she was nothing but a selfish brat in this one. Axel‘s storyline still didn’t have any importance in regard to the main plot. I was annoyed that Tessa went through a little side quest to obtain some information, only for it to be freely handed out to other characters a few chapters later, making it seem a little pointless.
I thought Theon was a bit too gentle in this book, which didn’t fit his character, although I do appreciate his character growth, albeit a bit too fast compared to others.

Eviana‘s POV chapters were really interesting to me, because it made me question what the bond is like for all the other pairs. Perhaps Tessa‘s and Theon‘s source bond is no different at all.

Nonetheless, I felt for the characters and love how all of them would probably agree that it is best for Devram to perish.
The final scene had me in tears!

At some point, one closes their kindle and realizes life is too precious to waste inside a world full of terrible characters doing petty things to each other.
