The narrator was excellent.

I really enjoyed the plot, the character development, and the humorous side characters. The romantic tension was 🔥 and I had a genuinely good time reading this book.

The writing and world-building felt a bit disjointed at times. A reference table at the start (introducing the gods, powers, countries, and leaders) would have been so helpful. The author is very descriptive when it comes to color, but otherwise I struggled to fully picture the scenes

Tone of the romance:
The MC has a reputation for cruelty, but he’s a total sweetheart with big emphasis on consent. He’s patient and understanding with the FMC, which made him even more heart-melting. I’m a total sucker for a guy who obviously cares about the FMC, even if her self-doubts keep her from recognizing it.

3.5 stars rounded up!

I really love the world and the politics of this world. The arranged marriage was such a slow burn, but the payoff was fantastic! There is a lot of info dumping about the world similar to the wall of text that starts a Star Wars movie. But I'd prefer too much information over being completely lost.

i really appreciate the authors approach in handling the physical, mental, and psychological affects of obtaining raw and untamed power. often we see “magical girls” somehow managing to maintain and control their powers in what seems a few chapters. vaasalisa is utterly horrified and terrified of the power the lies within her, and i find that to be the most human things about her, despite her feeling inhuman in every way.
she is cunning, and a leader, but she lacks control of her powers and you can see that that is the one thing in her life she has no dominance over. yes she speaks 6 languages (i get it cause its mentioned a million times) and yes she’s a weapon that her father groomed her to be, but behind that veil is a deeply vulnerable and soft character that is often shared between her coven, female friends, and her husband which is truly more “woman empowering” than some other authors claim their books to be.
i think the writing is great when it comes to the political, betrayals and psychological aspects.i really enjoy seeing the mmc fall head over heels for the fmc even if it was a bit insta lovey, and it was only enemies on her end i really enjoyed reading their banter and love for each other. he’s a good man vaasa!
that ending was very good, i was worried it would be reid that betrayed her but turns out it’s family at the end of the day that does. im excited to read the next book!
also feeling very nostalgic about vampire academy after seeing the fmc full name lol 😭
