The main character - Rob - is a total jackass. That said, it was a well written book. I wasn't a fan of how whiny he was the whole time, but that was just clearly who Rob the character was.

Makes me want to go re-watch the movie.

Music, relationships, careers, sex, meaning of life. All the topics of this novel told with the wit of British writing and from the viewpoint of a self-confident normal in every way man. Enjoyable read with lots of spot-on commentary regarding relationships.

I loved the movie immensely when I first saw it in 2000, and if possible love it more 10 years on. As is often the case, I loved the book in different ways, in part because it provoked a deep nostalgia for London.

Super well written one and very catchy. Seems like a dictionary of music and men feelings. Easy to visualize, you feel like you are part of the group and you are there in the record store with them.
Highly recommend.

mil veces mejor la versión de la película.

Okay very similar vibes to Good Material which I literally just finished but I still think I preferred this! Rob is sooo insufferable, but I felt like there were times of real introspection and growth, in a way that I didn’t feel happening in GM with Andy. I 100% understand why this is a cult classic now and I want to run off and watch the Zoe Kravitz tv adaptation of it!

I wasn't sure whether to give this book, one or two stars. For a bit, I thought I should give it two stars, simply because I *loved* the quote that goes something like this: "What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"
Overall the book was horrible. There was no plot, just endless chapters of whining. Our main character, Rob, was too self-absored, annoying and just a plain old douche. This book was supposed to be some sort of eye opener on why guys are the way they are, but all I got was pathetic excuses that pissed me off. It was a complete waste of time, and it was not funny at all. Over-hyped piece of crap.
