This one was a struggle for me. I was 75% through it and I wanted to dnf it so badly. But I knew I couldn't because it was for summer reading.

Don't get me wrong, the first 37% was good, but it just went downhill from there.

This really isn't my type of book in the first place. Since we're constantly reading and learning about WW2 it gets tiring to me after a while.

Also, I'm not a super religious person. I'm not unreligious, but I'm not crazy about it either, so that was another factor about this book that I didn't enjoy.

I thought the writing was beautiful though. It was a well written story, but it's just not my type of story.

Has been one of my favorite books since I read it in high school. Still amazing! A testament to God’s love and protection!

"Father sat down at the edge of the narrow bed.’Corrie,' he began gently, 'when you and I go to Amsterdam -- when do I give you your ticket?'
I sniffed a few times, considering this.
'Why, just before we get on the train.'
'Exactly. And our wise Father in heaven knows when we are going to need things, too. Don't run out ahead of Him, Corrie. When the time comes that some of us will have to die, you will look into your heart and find the strength you need -- just in time.'"(pg 44 – The Hiding Place)

Casper ten Boom, Corrie’s father, delivered this advice after she returned from the home of a neighbor whose baby had died. Though the advice was given while Corrie was a teenager, the sage words proved true over and over again through the span of Corrie’s remarkable life.

Few books have affected me the way The Hiding Place has. Not only was this book nearly impossible for me to put down, but the stories and images invaded my thoughts and even my dreams. On the surface, this book is about the German invasion of Holland during WWII, and how the Ten Boom family participated in aiding Jews through an underground network of support (as well as hiding some people in their own home). The book documents the raid of their home and the eventual sentence to a concentration camp for Corrie and her sister, Betsy. And on the surface alone, this is a great book of history, but what makes this book extraordinary is the faith in God that the Ten Boom family has. Because of their great faith, miracle after miracle takes place – even amidst the tragedy of war. In remarkable ways, God proves how faithful He is to those who believe. As their faith deepens in Him, He reveals Himself in even more powerful ways – through dreams, visions, signs and wonders. And the words that Corrie’s father spoke to her early in life prove true time and time again throughout this book – “… you will look into your heart and find the strength you need – just in time.”

“Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word.” – Psalm 119:114

“Perhaps only when human effort had done it's best and failed, would God's power alone be free to work.”

I would have never expected this historical account of Christianity in the midst of WWII to hit so close to home for a Christian living through 2020. But that's the thing about Jesus - His faithfulness endures forever, and He is the same yesterday, today, and always.

Wow. Absolutely read this book.

This was a re-read for a book club. This book can alter the course of someone’s life and has the ability to change the heart, if we let it.
