Corrie's story is so compelling. Found in a book swap bookstore in Parry Sound, Ontario.
I read this book for my book club, and after reading quite a few reviews noting the heavy hand of religion, I was really concerned. (Plus the edition of the book our bookstore sold was from some Christian publisher, and our bookstore is not religious, nor is our book club.) I considered not even reading it, because I was worried it would be too preachy and pushing of religion. Perhaps because I knew this going in, all of the religious references did not bother me. This book is memoir, so all of the religious statements were how she interpreted the events. In places, the book jumped too much in time, and I'm skeptical of some of the details, given that it was written long after the events described. However, her story is an interesting one, and she seems like a fantastic woman who helped many people. From what I read, she seems to embody what Christianity should be -- the helping of other people and dealing with traumatic events and the concern for humanity. So, I'll give it four stars. It greatly exceeded my expectations.
An incredibly inspiring story, although I didn’t like the way it was written. My favorite quote of hers was –
“I discovered that it is not on our forgiveness any more than on our goodness that the world’s healing hinges, but on His. When He tells us to love our enemies, He gives, along with the command, the love itself.”
“I discovered that it is not on our forgiveness any more than on our goodness that the world’s healing hinges, but on His. When He tells us to love our enemies, He gives, along with the command, the love itself.”
This book taught me so much. the Boom's family story taught me what it means to truly have faith, to sacrifice and give thanks, to have hope and to forgive. I loved Betsie near the end, when she prayed that those who inflicted the suffering were comforted and loved. She forgave and saw each and everyone as a human being. Mr. Boom saw the same way. I loved Corrie and how her testimony grew and grew through each experience. She couldn't see what was ahead which made her uneasy. As she surrounded herself with good things, like hope, forgiveness, optimism and love, her heart was guided to her home above. I almost didn't want to finish it, because it was too good and I knew that if I ended it, I would be sad with saying goodbye to all my new family in this book. I believe that everyone who hasn't heard a story outside of a jewish account should read this. It's comforting that many people of many races were trying to stop the Nazi. This is a classic. May Corrie and the Boom family, wherever they rest feel my love. :)
